CNN journalist Jason Carroll got briefly detained by police while reporting live during a protest in Los Angeles. The moment unfolded on air as anchors in the studio suddenly lost connection with him. Viewers could see Carroll being escorted by officers, hands behind his back, away from the protest area.
Told To Leave The Scene
Once away from the scene, Carroll informed the studio, “I am being detained.” Moments later, an officer told him, “We’re letting you go. You can’t come back. If you come back, you will be arrested.” Carroll thanked the officers and remained calm after the incident.
Carroll Describes What Happened
Carroll later shared more details. He said an officer asked him to put his hands behind his back. When Carroll asked if he was being arrested, the officer replied that he was being “detained.” Carroll explained that he identified himself as a CNN reporter, but that didn’t change the outcome. Officers didn’t handcuff him, but held both his hands and walked him away from the scene.
“They told me I couldn’t stay in the area,” Carroll said. “They were moving people out.”
CNN Responds To The Incident
CNN later released a statement. They confirmed that their crew was briefly held by police while filming events as officers cleared out an area during the protest. The network said it was resolved quickly after the team showed their media credentials.
“We are pleased the situation resolved quickly once the reporting team presented law enforcement with their CNN credentials. CNN will continue to report out the news unfolding in Los Angeles,” the statement read.
Covering Protests Comes With Risk
Carroll spoke about how situations like this are part of covering major protests. He said, “You take a lot of risks as press. This is low on that scale of risks, but it is something that I wasn’t expecting, simply because we’ve been out here all day.”
He added that in most protests, officers recognize that journalists are there to do their job and allow them to continue reporting.
Tension Grows Over Immigration Raids
The protests are tied to actions by immigration enforcement teams following new orders from the U.S. President. These teams are now targeting people who live in the country without legal status. The move has sparked protests in several cities, including Los Angeles, where crowds have gathered to voice their opposition.
As these protests grow, reporters continue to cover the unfolding events, often putting themselves in unpredictable situations to bring the news to the public.
