Coca-Cola is tapping into nostalgia by bringing back one of its most talked-about drinks — Mr. Pibb. The company announced that the iconic soda will return to store shelves with a new formula and design aimed at modern tastes. Fans who grew up with the drink can expect a bolder twist this time around.
Mr. Pibb first appeared in the 1970s as Coca-Cola’s answer to Dr. Pepper. The drink gained a loyal following for its sweet, spicy cherry flavour. In 2001, Coca-Cola rebranded it as Pibb Xtra, but the update never reached the same level of popularity. Over time, the soda became rare and hard to find in stores.
Now, more than two decades later, Coca-Cola is officially bringing the original name back — along with some exciting updates.
A Bold New Taste
According to Coca-Cola, the revived Mr. Pibb offers a stronger cherry flavour, balanced with caramel undertones and a light spicy finish. The company described it as “sweet with a bite,” created for drinkers who enjoy a bit more personality in their soda.
“Bringing back Mr. Pibb is about more than reviving a classic,” said Dane Callis, director of sparkling flavours for Coca-Cola North America. “It’s about honouring an icon that fans have never stopped talking about and reintroducing its bold, unapologetic flavour to a new generation.”
The company added another change that’s sure to catch attention — more caffeine. The new Mr. Pibb will have 30% more caffeine than Pibb Xtra, giving it an extra kick for those who like a stronger morning boost.
“The spicy cherry segment is growing fast,” Callis explained. “This is the perfect moment to bring back Mr. Pibb with a modern twist — a little more caffeine, a new look, and a lot more attitude.”
The Perfect Timing
Coca-Cola’s move comes just as a major change hit the soda market. A Texas court recently ended Dr. Pepper’s long-running distribution deal with Reyes Coca-Cola Bottling. This decision gives Keurig Dr Pepper full control of its own supply chain for restaurants, movie theatres, and other outlets.
The shift also means Dr. Pepper will disappear from Coca-Cola-owned soda fountains — opening room for its rival, Mr. Pibb, to take the spotlight again.
Coca-Cola hasn’t confirmed whether the return of Mr. Pibb was influenced by this decision, but the timing is hard to miss.
Hitting Shelves Soon
The new Mr. Pibb will first roll out across the West Coast, Midwest, and Florida in the coming days. It will be sold in 12-packs of 12-ounce cans and 20-ounce bottles. More regions will see it in 2026.
Coca-Cola hopes fans will feel both nostalgia and excitement when they spot the familiar logo again. “We hope fans feel that spark of nostalgia when they see Mr. Pibb back on shelves, but also the excitement of discovering something that feels fresh, bold, and unapologetically fun,” said Callis.
