Tragedy struck near Fort Smith, N.W.T. on Tuesday as a plane crash claimed the lives of six individuals, as confirmed by the territory's coroner service. The incident involved a British Aerospace Jetstream aircraft registered to Northwestern Air Lease, which crashed shortly after take-off, approximately 500 meters from the end of the Fort Smith Regional Airport's runway. The crash occurred during the plane's journey to the Diavik diamond mine, situated about 300 kilometres northeast of Yellowknife.

The victims comprised four passengers and two crew members from Northwestern Air Lease, with only one person surviving the crash. The survivor has been transported to Stanton Territorial Hospital in Yellowknife for medical attention. The deceased included Howie Benwell, a 30-year-old individual identified by his family, and four other passengers. Notably, Kurt Macdonald, an electrician at the Diavik mine and the father of a five-month-old son survived the crash.

Northwestern Air Lease expressed condolences in a Facebook statement, urging time for collective mourning and emphasizing mutual support during this challenging period. Chief Coroner Garth Eggenberger disclosed that the announcement of survivors and deceased was delayed to ensure accuracy and allow family notifications. Eggenberger's team is currently in Fort Smith, collaborating with the Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) and the RCMP for a comprehensive investigation. While the chief coroner anticipates completing his report within a year, the full investigation may extend over the same period.

Amidst the grieving community, Fort Smith's recreation center has opened its doors to provide solace for those who prefer not to be alone. The mayor and council released a statement expressing deep sorrow over the losses, inviting residents to visit for comfort and conversation. In a similar vein, the City of Yellowknife extended condolences to the affected families and friends, emphasizing community support during this difficult time. Emotional assistance resources were also highlighted for those impacted by the tragedy.

The British Aerospace Jetstream crash is under investigation by the TSB, and chief coroner Eggenberger stressed the importance of community support and counselling for those grappling with trauma. As the towns of Fort Smith and Yellowknife unite in mourning, their leaders underscore the significance of coming together to navigate this profound loss.
