Afghanistan has pledged full cooperation with Tajikistan after a deadly cross-border attack killed three Chinese workers and injured another in Tajikistan. Kabul expressed “deep regret” over the incident and vowed to support the investigation to maintain regional stability.

Afghanistan Condemns Cross-Border Attack

Afghanistan’s Foreign Ministry strongly condemned the assault and emphasized the need for regional unity.
Deputy spokesman Hafiz Zia Ahmad Takal said initial assessments suggested that “elements seeking chaos and distrust” were behind the attack.

He added that Afghanistan is ready for information-sharing, joint assessments, and full coordination with Tajikistan. The government also stressed the importance of preventing any actor from exploiting tensions between neighboring countries.

Drone Attack Originated From Afghanistan, Says Tajikistan

Tajikistan’s Foreign Ministry announced that the attack happened late Wednesday night.
Officials said the assault was launched from inside Afghanistan using a drone fitted with grenades and firearms.

The ministry criticized ongoing “disruptive actions by criminal groups” operating within Afghan territory. It urged Afghan authorities to strengthen border security and curb militant activity in the region. Tajikistan highlighted that it has consistently worked to maintain peace along the frontier, despite recurring threats.

China Issues Warning to Its Citizens

Following the attack, the Chinese Embassy in Tajikistan issued a stark warning.
It urged Chinese nationals to avoid investing or working near the Tajikistan-Afghanistan border region due to rising security risks. Those already in the area were advised to evacuate immediately.

China has growing economic interests in Central Asia, making the attack particularly concerning for Beijing, which continues to seek stability for its overseas workers.

Tense Tajikistan–Afghanistan Relations Add Pressure

Relations between Tajikistan and Afghanistan have been strained for years.
Tajikistan openly opposed the Taliban’s takeover in 2021 and cut diplomatic ties soon after.

However, the past year has seen gradual reconciliation. Markets along the border reopened in 2023, and a recent high-level Tajik delegation visited Kabul earlier this month. The attack threatens to undermine these efforts, raising concerns about future cooperation.

Regional Security Concerns Rise After Attack

The cross-border incident has raised fresh questions about border stability in Central Asia.
Tajikistan sits at a critical geographic point and often faces spillover threats from militant groups operating in Afghanistan.

For Afghanistan, the attack poses diplomatic pressure. The government must demonstrate its ability to control extremist groups and reassure neighboring countries of its commitment to peace.

Afghanistan Vows Joint Investigation to Maintain Stability

Afghanistan reiterated that it does not want tensions to escalate.
“The government assures full cooperation with Tajikistan,” Takal said, highlighting that both sides must address regional threats collectively.

Security experts say a joint investigation will be crucial. It may help identify who carried out the attack, their motive, and whether transnational groups were involved.

Looking Ahead After the Cross-Border Attack

The attack killing three Chinese nationals has created a triangular security challenge involving Afghanistan, Tajikistan, and China.
All three nations now face pressure to tighten coordination, especially in border zones vulnerable to militant activity.

As Kabul and Dushanbe work through their uneasy relationship, the focus now shifts to preventing future attacks, ensuring border stability, and restoring trust between the neighboring countries.
