Former Oil Kings star forward returns to Edmonton after gathering 572 games of NHL experience
Curtis Lazar is coming back to where it all began. The Edmonton Oilers have officially signed the veteran forward to a one-year contract worth $775,000, marking his return to familiar territory.
Lazar, now 30, brings a wealth of NHL experience with him. Over his career, he has played 572 games in the league, scoring 47 goals and registering 78 assists. The versatile forward has previously suited up for several teams, including the Ottawa Senators, Calgary Flames, Boston Bruins, Vancouver Canucks, and most recently, the New Jersey Devils.
A Homecoming for the Former Oil Kings Forward
This move is more than just a roster addition—it’s a homecoming. Lazar played his junior hockey with the Edmonton Oil Kings from 2010 to 2014. During his four-year stint, he became a key player and a fan favorite. He helped the team secure two WHL championships in 2012 and 2014, and capped it off with a Memorial Cup victory in 2014.
His return to Edmonton, now as a member of the NHL club, is expected to bring both leadership and depth to the Oilers' lineup.
Solid NHL Experience Across Multiple Teams
Lazar's NHL journey began when he was drafted 17th overall in the first round of the 2013 NHL Draft by the Ottawa Senators. He broke into the league shortly after and spent parts of four seasons with Ottawa before moving on to other franchises.
His most recent campaign with the New Jersey Devils saw him appear in 48 games during the 2024-25 season. He contributed two goals and three assists for a total of five points, showing that he still offers value as a depth forward.
Reliable, Experienced, and Team-First
At 6 feet and 203 pounds, Lazar is known for his two-way game, grit, and work ethic. Though not a top-line scorer, his consistency, defensive responsibility, and locker room presence have earned him respect across the league.
For the Oilers, who continue to build a contender around stars like Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl, adding experienced and team-first players like Lazar is a strategic move.
Edmonton Gains Depth at Forward
Curtis Lazar's signing helps the Oilers address their bottom-six forward depth. His ability to play center or wing, combined with penalty-killing capabilities, makes him a useful tool in the lineup. The short-term nature of the deal also gives the team flexibility going forward.
Head Coach Kris Knoblauch and General Manager Ken Holland will likely use Lazar in a utility role—trusted in key defensive situations and called upon for energy shifts.
Fans Welcome Back a Familiar Face
Oilers fans will remember Lazar not just for his NHL resume, but for his contributions during his WHL days with the Oil Kings. His leadership helped shape one of the most successful eras in team history. Now, he returns to Edmonton with a full-circle narrative and hopes of helping the Oilers chase a Stanley Cup.
The team’s announcement on Wednesday has already sparked excitement among fans and added a sense of nostalgia to the upcoming season.
