**Cyber Attack Targets Canada's Anti-Money Laundering Agency**

Canada's Financial Transactions and Reports Analysis Centre (FINTRAC) disclosed a recent cyber incident, announcing the temporary shutdown of its corporate systems as a precautionary measure. While the agency assured the public that its intelligence and classified systems remained unaffected, details regarding the nature of the attack were not disclosed. Collaborating closely with federal partners, including the Canadian Centre for Cyber Security, FINTRAC aims to safeguard and restore its systems promptly.

FINTRAC plays a crucial role in combating money laundering and terrorist financing while upholding the privacy of personal information. The agency's global collaborations underscore the significance of its work, with recent initiatives aiding law enforcement in high-profile cases such as Project Cobra, which led to substantial drug seizures and multiple arrests. Domestically, FINTRAC provides essential financial intelligence to support law enforcement and national security efforts.

Under the Minister of Finance's oversight, FINTRAC enforces the Proceeds of Crime (Money Laundering) and Terrorist Financing Act, obligating various businesses, including financial institutions, credit unions, and real estate brokers, to report specified transactions. Non-compliance may result in administrative penalties, highlighting the agency's regulatory authority in safeguarding financial integrity and national security.
