Actress Dakota Johnson and musician Chris Martin have apparently been engaged for several years, as per various reports. A source close to the couple disclosed to People that they had agreed to tie the knot some years back but were in no hurry to formalize their union. Speculation about their engagement arose in 2020 when Johnson was spotted wearing an emerald ring on her ring finger. Later on, it was confirmed by a source to the magazine that the ring indeed signified their engagement.

Both the 34-year-old actress and the 47-year-old musician's representatives have been contacted by ET for comments regarding this news.

This news of their engagement surfaces nearly a decade after the Coldplay frontman and the Fifty Shades of Grey star were first confirmed to be in a relationship back in December 2017. At that time, a source revealed to ET that the pair had been seeing each other for at least two months.

"They've been dating since early October and spend most nights hanging out at his house and laying low," the source shared. "His friends already love her and see how happy she makes him." The confirmation of their romance came the following January when they were first photographed together.

Despite being a couple ever since, Johnson and Martin have chosen to keep their relationship away from the public eye, seldom appearing together on the red carpet. Johnson emphasized her preference for privacy from the beginning, stating in a 2018 interview with Tatler that she wouldn't discuss their relationship but expressed her happiness.

The couple did make a joint appearance for a charitable cause in September 2019 at Forest Whitaker's Whitaker Peace and Development Initiative's Place for Peace event in New York City. Additionally, they were spotted vacationing in the Hamptons with Martin's ex-wife, Gwyneth Paltrow, and her husband, Brad Falchuk, the month before. Martin and Paltrow, who split in 2014, share two children.

"I love her," Paltrow remarked about Johnson in a 2020 interview with Harper's Bazaar. "I can see how it would seem weird because it's sort of unconventional. But I think, in this case, just having passed through it iteratively, I just adore her."

Don Johnson, Dakota's father, echoed similar sentiments regarding Martin during an appearance on Good Day New York. "He's a lovely guy," the Miami Vice alum stated. "...And if she decides to get married, I would imagine that there would be grandchildren not too far after that. I'd be pretty excited about that part."

Speaking more recently, Johnson addressed the topic of children, expressing her love for Martin's kids and her openness to the idea of having more. "I'm so open to that. I've gotten to this place where I really want to experience everything that life has to offer," she mentioned in an interview with Bustle. "And especially being a woman, I'm like, What a magical f**king thing to do. What a crazy, magical, wild experience. If that’s meant to happen for me, I'm totally down for it."
