The Pittsburgh Penguins have appointed Dan Muse as their new head coach, marking a fresh start for the NHL team. The 42-year-old steps into the role for the first time in his NHL coaching career, taking over from Mike Sullivan. Muse brings two seasons of experience as an assistant coach with the New York Rangers.
Penguins Seek Revival After Missed Playoffs
The Penguins finished the recent season with a disappointing 34-36-12 record. They missed the playoffs for the third consecutive year, ending 11 points behind the Montreal Canadiens for the Eastern Conference’s second wild card spot. This ended their impressive streak of 16 straight playoff appearances.
Dan Muse’s Coaching Journey
Before joining the Rangers, Muse coached USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program for three seasons. He also worked as an assistant coach under Peter Laviolette with the New York Rangers and the Nashville Predators. His coaching career includes leading the Chicago Steel of the United States Hockey League to the 2017 Clark Cup championship. Additionally, he served as an assistant coach for the Yale Bulldogs, helping them win the 2013 NCAA National Championship.
Why Muse Stands Out to Penguins Management
Kyle Dubas, Penguins general manager, praised Muse’s coaching credentials. “We met with many strong candidates,” Dubas said, “but Dan Muse stood out for his player development skills and consistent success coaching special teams.”
Dubas emphasized Muse’s ability to connect with players across different career stages. “From developing college and junior players to working with veterans, Dan has a proven track record of helping players reach their potential.”
Special Teams Expertise a Key Factor
Muse led Nashville’s penalty kill unit, which ranked fourth in the NHL during his two full seasons from 2017 to 2019. He held the same role with the Rangers, where the penalty kill again ranked fourth in the league.
Dubas noted, “His leadership of special teams in Nashville and New York consistently delivered elite results. His attention to detail and vision for the Penguins make him the right coach to move the team forward.”
New Beginnings in Pittsburgh
The Penguins expressed excitement about welcoming Muse and his family to Pittsburgh. The organization is hopeful that his fresh approach will revive the team’s success and return them to the playoffs.
Coaching Changes Across the NHL
This coaching shuffle comes as other NHL teams also make new hires. The Boston Bruins finished their season with Joe Sacco as interim coach and are currently searching for a permanent replacement. Meanwhile, recent hires include Lane Lambert for the Seattle Kraken, Jeff Blashill for the Chicago Blackhawks, Rick Tocchet for the Philadelphia Flyers, Adam Foote for the Vancouver Canucks, Joel Quenneville for the Anaheim Ducks, and Mike Sullivan joining the New York Rangers.
