Actor Eric Dane sat down for his first interview since sharing his ALS diagnosis. The 52-year-old, best known for his roles in Grey’s Anatomy and Euphoria, appeared in a preview clip for an upcoming segment with journalist Diane Sawyer. The short teaser aired on June 12 and showed an emotional Dane reflecting on his health.
Facing the Diagnosis
In the video, Dane looked serious as he spoke openly about how the disease has affected his life. "I wake up every day and I’m immediately reminded that this is happening,” he told Sawyer. “It’s not a dream.” He appeared visibly emotional during the conversation, holding Sawyer’s hand as they discussed his experience.
At one point, Dane tearfully said, “I don’t think this is the end of my story. I don’t feel like this is the end of me.”
Sharing the News
Dane first made his diagnosis public in April. In a statement at that time, he said, “I have been diagnosed with ALS. I am grateful to have my loving family by my side as we navigate this next chapter.”
Dane is married to actress Rebecca Gayheart. The couple has two daughters—Billie Beatrice, 15, and Georgia Geraldine, 13. He also asked for privacy for his family during this difficult time.
What Is ALS?
ALS stands for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. It is often called Lou Gehrig’s disease. This rare condition affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. Over time, the disease causes muscles to weaken and leads to problems with speaking, walking, swallowing, and even breathing.
The first signs usually include muscle twitching or weakness in a limb, followed by slurred speech. As ALS progresses, patients gradually lose the ability to move on their own. There is no known cure for ALS.
Doctors say that most people diagnosed with ALS live between three to five years. However, some live much longer.
Looking Ahead
Despite the diagnosis, Dane remains hopeful. His words in the interview show strength and courage: “I don’t feel like this is the end of me.” His fans and the public have expressed support and admiration for his openness.
The full interview is expected to air soon and will give more insight into Dane’s journey with ALS. Many viewers are already expressing interest in hearing more about how he’s coping and what comes next.
