Danny Jansen will catch for the Red Sox when the game resumes, after starting as a Blue Jay. The Associated Press

In a unique twist of baseball history, Boston Red Sox catcher Danny Jansen is set to make a remarkable mark by becoming the first player ever to appear in the same game for both teams. This rare feat will unfold when Jansen takes the field in a suspended game from June 26 between the Toronto Blue Jays and the Boston Red Sox.
The unusual situation began with a rain delay that interrupted the game when Jansen was still with the Blue Jays. Jansen, who had been with Toronto, was traded to Boston before the game could resume. Red Sox manager Alex Cora confirmed that Jansen would be included in the lineup when the game picks up again.

Reflecting on the situation, Jansen expressed his surprise at the historic nature of his upcoming appearance. “Baseball has been around for so long, there’s so many things that’s happened in the game. So I was surprised when I found out I was the first,” he said. “Any time you can be a part of this great game’s history, it’s pretty unique.”

Jansen, known for his role as a right-handed backup catcher, has had a modest career with a .222 lifetime batting average. Since being traded to Boston on July 27, he has contributed with a .231 average, including two home runs and five RBIs over 14 games. Despite his unremarkable stats, his role in this historic game could see him honored as a notable part of baseball’s rich history.

The game, which was suspended with Jansen at bat with a runner on first base, will resume with Jansen likely behind the plate. Toronto manager John Schneider remarked on Jansen’s situation, noting, “It’s pretty fitting that Jano will be the first guy to do that. He’s that kind of guy. Weird stuff happens to him.”

The June 26 game will be completed as part of a doubleheader on Monday. The original lineup for the Blue Jays has changed since the suspension, with some players no longer on the roster. Red Sox associate manager DeMarlo Hale has been preparing to adjust the lineup to accommodate the resumption of the game.

The historical nature of Jansen’s participation is expected to be marked with a special artifact being collected for the Hall of Fame. The game’s resumption will be a day of celebration and history, with Jansen’s unique role highlighted.

“Jansen will play Game 1, by the way, for all the people who have been looking at history,” said Red Sox manager Cora. “You know what? Yeah, he’s catching. Let’s make history.”
