Alphonso Davies delivered a dramatic moment for Bayern Munich on Tuesday, scoring a crucial stoppage-time goal that secured the team's place in the Champions League round of 16. The Canadian wing-back’s late equalizer sealed a 1-1 draw against Celtic, helping Bayern advance with a 3-2 aggregate victory.

Davies' Decisive Goal

With just seconds left in the match, Davies reacted instinctively, bundling the ball past Celtic’s defence to prevent extra time. The 24-year-old, who recently extended his contract with Bayern until 2030, celebrated passionately—kissing the club's crest and pointing at it, a sign of loyalty that Bayern’s management had been waiting to see.

"It was pure instinct," Davies said. "I’m happy to score and help my team." This was only his second goal in the Champions League, but it could not have come at a better time.

Contract Drama Ends with a Big Deal

Davies' future at Bayern had been uncertain for months as contract negotiations dragged on. With his previous deal set to expire at the end of the season, there was speculation that Real Madrid might try to sign him. In March, Bayern's sporting director Max Eberl stated that the club had made its final offer, leaving Davies with a big decision.

In the end, both sides reached an agreement, securing Davies a lucrative new contract worth approximately €20 million (USD 21 million) per year. His goal on Tuesday served as an early return on that investment, keeping Bayern’s Champions League hopes alive.

A Valuable Win for Bayern

Securing a spot in the last 16 also brought financial rewards. Bayern will receive €11 million (USD 11.5 million) in prize money from UEFA—a bonus for the club.

Reflecting on the match, Davies acknowledged the challenge posed by Celtic. "That’s the Champions League," he said. "Celtic played with intensity, and it wasn’t easy. We’re playing so many matches but happy to advance."

What’s Next for Bayern?

Bayern will soon find out who they’ll face in the next round, with Bayer Leverkusen and Atletico Madrid as potential opponents. Before that, they return to Bundesliga action on Sunday, hosting a strong Eintracht Frankfurt side. With momentum on their side, Bayern will look to build on this crucial victory.
