A fierce battle erupted in Pakistan’s northwestern Orakzai district near the Afghan border, killing 11 soldiers and 19 militants. The confrontation followed a pre-dawn raid by Pakistani security forces on a suspected Taliban hideout, the military confirmed.
Operation Targets Taliban Hideout
The operation took place early Wednesday in Orakzai, part of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, a region long affected by insurgency. According to the military, the raid aimed to dismantle a militant stronghold linked to the Pakistani Taliban. The encounter quickly escalated into a violent gunbattle.
Militants Identified as ‘Khwarij’
The military identified the slain insurgents as “Khwarij,” a term used by Pakistani authorities to describe militants allegedly supported by India. The group reportedly included fighters from the banned Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and the Baloch Liberation Army.
Pakistan has repeatedly accused New Delhi of backing separatists in Balochistan and Pakistani Taliban militants. India, however, has consistently denied these claims.
Pakistani Taliban Claim Responsibility
In a rare statement, the Pakistani Taliban claimed responsibility for targeting the troops in Orakzai. The militant group, which operates separately but maintains ties with the Afghan Taliban, has increased attacks in Pakistan in recent years.
Since the Taliban took control in Kabul in 2021, many TTP leaders and fighters are believed to be operating from Afghan sanctuaries. This cross-border presence has emboldened their operations in Pakistan’s border regions.
Tribute to Fallen Soldiers
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif lauded the military’s efforts in eliminating the militants. He also paid homage to the soldiers who sacrificed their lives. Among the fallen were Lt. Col. Junaid Arif and Maj. Tayyab Rahat, both praised for their bravery in the battle. Nine additional soldiers also died while defending the country.
Rising Militancy in Pakistan
Orakzai and surrounding regions have been flashpoints of militant activity for decades. Pakistani authorities report a surge in attacks in recent years, most attributed to the TTP. These incidents often target security forces, government installations, and civilians, destabilizing the region.
The ongoing militancy has sparked repeated military operations, but challenges remain due to the complex terrain and cross-border insurgent support. Analysts warn that as long as militants find safe havens in Afghanistan, Pakistan’s northwestern areas remain vulnerable.
Security Forces Continue Counterterrorism Efforts
Despite the losses, the military emphasized that operations against insurgents will continue. Security forces remain on high alert along the Afghan border to prevent further infiltration. The government reiterated its commitment to eradicating militant networks in the region.
The clash in Orakzai highlights the persistent threat posed by militant groups in Pakistan’s northwest. While the military claims tactical victories, the human cost underscores the ongoing security challenges faced by the country.
