A 27-year-old man stormed a tall office building in Midtown Manhattan on Monday evening. He carried a rifle and began shooting at about 6:30 p.m., causing panic during the busy rush hour. Four people died, including a police officer, and several others were hurt before the gunman took his own life, police said.
Who Was the Shooter?
The attacker was identified as Shane Tamura, who lived in Las Vegas. Police said he had a history of mental health issues. He drove from Las Vegas and arrived in New York earlier that day.
Security cameras caught him calmly walking with a rifle outside the building, which houses the NFL headquarters and a big investment company.
The Shooting Unfolds
Tamura entered the building lobby and immediately shot Officer Didarul Islam in the back. Islam, 36, later died at the hospital. Then Tamura fired at a woman hiding behind a pillar and continued shooting across the lobby.
He shot a security guard who was hiding behind a desk. A man was also injured but survived.
In a surprising moment, Tamura let a woman leave the elevators without harm.
The Rampage Continues Upstairs
Tamura took an elevator to the 33rd floor, where he kept firing as he walked through offices. There, he killed one more person before shooting himself in the chest.
Police found his body on the floor and a bloodstained rifle nearby. The weapon was an AR-15 style rifle.
Chaos and Response
Witnesses said the sound of gunfire was loud and rapid, like an automatic weapon. People ran for cover and fled the building with their hands raised.
Emergency responders arrived quickly. They performed CPR on victims and helped the injured.
Police closed off the area, and the FBI and bomb squad joined the investigation.
Background on Victims and Shooter
Officer Didarul Islam had worked for the NYPD since 2021. He was off-duty but assigned to the building for security. He leaves behind a pregnant wife and two children.
Police said Tamura worked as a security guard in Las Vegas but had recently stopped going to work. He had a valid firearms permit from Nevada.
Police also found a gun case, extra ammunition, and medication in his car near the scene.
Ongoing Investigation
Authorities said they don’t yet know why Tamura attacked this specific building.
NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said, “His motives are still under investigation. We are working to understand why he targeted this particular location.”
Two protesters were arrested near the building, but police said they were not connected to the shooting.
Community Reacts
Neighbors and workers described the scene as terrifying. One witness said, “It sounded like a barrage of shots.” Another said, “A lot of police started to come. It’s crazy.”
The city’s mayor was briefed and urged people to avoid the area.
