The shocking incident also saw a mass escape, with around 1,534 inmates breaking free from the facility. However, authorities have since managed to capture 150 of the escapees.

"The confrontations after that resulted in 33 deaths and 15 injuries in the vicinity of the jail," Rafael confirmed during a media briefing.

While most of the prisoners managed to flee the scene, the police and security forces were quick to take action, and 150 escapees have already been recaptured. It is unclear whether the authorities have made any progress in locating the remaining prisoners.
