A mass shooting early Sunday morning in Austin, Texas, left at least three people dead and 14 others injured, according to police. Authorities said officers shot and killed the suspect during a confrontation at the scene.
The violence unfolded outside Buford’s, a well-known bar along West 6th Street, an area famous for its live music, busy restaurants and weekend crowds.
Police confirmed that two victims died at the scene. Emergency crews transported 14 others to hospital. Doctors listed three of the injured in critical condition.
FBI Examines Possible Terror Link
Federal investigators have joined local police in examining the case. The FBI said it is reviewing evidence that may point to a possible terrorism connection.
Alex Doran, acting special agent in charge of the FBI’s San Antonio field office, told reporters, “There were indicators on the subject, and in his vehicle, that indicate a potential nexus to terrorism.”
Officials have not released the suspect’s name or confirmed a clear motive.
The FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force is working closely with the Austin Police Department. Evidence response and digital forensic teams are also assisting with the investigation.
What Police Say Happened
Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis described the events during a Sunday news conference. She said the suspect drove an SUV around the block several times before the shooting.
At one point, the driver turned on the vehicle’s hazard lights, lowered the window and began firing a pistol toward people gathered on the patio of Buford’s and along the sidewalk. After that, the suspect drove west, parked the SUV and stepped out. He then continued shooting at pedestrians walking nearby.
Officers in the area responded quickly and exchanged gunfire with the suspect at a nearby intersection. Police shot and killed him there.
Chief Davis said law enforcement and emergency crews were already close by because large weekend crowds often gather in the district. She noted that the quick response helped prevent further casualties.
National Attention
The White House confirmed that President Donald Trump received a briefing on the incident.
Authorities continue to gather evidence and interview witnesses. Investigators are working to understand whether the suspect acted alone and what may have led to the attack.
A Growing Concern
This shooting marks the 56th mass shooting in the United States this year, according to figures from the Gun Violence Archive. The organization defines a mass shooting as an event where at least four people, not including the shooter, are injured or killed.
Last year, the country recorded 407 mass shootings, based on the same data source.
Residents in Austin’s entertainment district expressed shock at the violence in a neighbourhood usually known for music and nightlife. Police have increased patrols in the area as the investigation continues.
Authorities have asked anyone with information or video footage to come forward.
