On a memorable Saturday evening, around 700 guests from India and beyond gathered at the Jio World Center in Mumbai, eagerly awaiting an unforgettable fashion spectacle. The legendary Indian designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee, known for his luxurious and opulent designs, celebrated his 25th anniversary with a star-studded runway show that left the audience in awe.

The show featured a mix of contrasts, blending different colors and textures while highlighting exceptional skill and craftsmanship. CNN

Sabyasachi has dressed some of the biggest names in Bollywood and Hollywood, from Priyanka Chopra and Deepika Padukone to Rihanna and Jennifer Lopez. For his milestone event, Deepika Padukone kicked off the show in an all-white ensemble, complete with necklaces from Mukherjee’s jewelry line, including a stunning crucifix. Padukone later shared the stage with supermodel Christy Turlington for the grand finale, adding to the star power of the evening.

The new collection is inspired by legendary women from history, such as Frida Kahlo, Madonna, and Coco Chanel. CNN

The show was a striking display of contrasts, according to the designer, featuring a variety of colors, textures, and intricate craftsmanship. Mukherjee’s latest collection drew inspiration from powerful women in history, such as Frida Kahlo, Madonna, and Coco Chanel. Over 150 looks were unveiled, including embellished pants, skirts with gold thread embroidery, frilled headgear, stacked jewelry, and tops with witty slogans like “cat lady” and “all dressed up nowhere to go.” These slogans were a subtle commentary on how technology has alienated humans and made it harder to connect with one another.

While the collection showcased Mukherjee’s signature festive and bridal wear, which typically includes traditional Indian attire like saris and sherwanis, it also included Western-inspired pieces. There were trench coats, sweaters, shirts, and even shorts, which marked a departure from his usual style. Yet, even these pieces maintained his flair for drama, with jackets adorned with semi-precious stones and velvet-appliquéd blouses layered with faux fur.

Over 150 outfits were showcased, set against a backdrop inspired by Mukherjee's hometown of Kolkata. CNN

Mukherjee’s roots in Kolkata, India, were evident throughout the show. The event's backdrop was inspired by the rich history and culture of his home city, renowned for its architecture, art, and literature. Guests, including actors Alia Bhatt, Rani Mukherji, and industrialist Kumar Mangalam Birla, marveled at the colonial-style pillars and blue arches that set the stage for the show. Mukherjee shared that Kolkata’s unique blend of sophistication and hedonism deeply influenced his designs, shaping his artistic consciousness.

In a statement, Mukherjee expressed, “We believe India is not a developing economy but a first-class civilization. It has always been the birthplace of luxury, and together, we aim to establish India’s first global luxury brand.” CNN

The opening of the show was marked by songs in Bengali, composed by renowned musicians including Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore, reflecting Mukherjee’s love for his culture. As the show progressed, the music seamlessly blended with the fashion, creating an emotional experience for the audience.

The brand has expanded to include a dedicated team of 3,000 artisans and staff members across India, collaborating with skilled craftsmen from all over the world to bring their designs to life. CNN

Looking ahead, Mukherjee shared his ambitious plans to expand his brand beyond bridal wear, with a focus on ready-to-wear collections, fragrances, and beauty products. His company aims to make its mark in the United States, partnering with major retail outlets. Mukherjee also believes that India, with its rich heritage and culture, is poised to become a global leader in luxury fashion. His brand has already grown to include a team of 3,000 artisans and employees across India, working with craftspeople from all over the world to bring his creations to life.

The grand finale was marked by a touching moment as Mukherjee, dressed casually in jeans and a black top, took a bow alongside Padukone and Turlington. A Bengali version of “We Shall Overcome” played in the background as the crowd gave a standing ovation. In the words of Mukherjee, “Humanity, after all, is the biggest luxury today.”
