A woman lost her life after immigration officers shot her during an encounter in Minneapolis. Authorities said she tried to drive into the officers, but newly surfaced video footage suggests the situation unfolded in a more complicated way. CNN

A fatal shooting involving immigration officers in Minneapolis has drawn national attention and raised questions about what happened in the moments before a woman died. The incident took place Wednesday when officers shot and killed a 37-year-old woman during an encounter on a city street.

Department of Homeland Security said shortly after the shooting that the woman tried to run over officers with her vehicle “to kill them.” President Donald Trump echoed that claim online, saying video showed the woman “violently, willfully, and viciously ran over” an officer.

Later that day, U.S. Senator Tina Smith confirmed the woman’s identity as Renee Nicole Good.

What Officials Said

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem told reporters in Texas that officers faced an attack. She said the woman “attempted to run them over and ram them with her vehicle” after officers became stuck in snow.

Those statements shaped early public understanding of the incident.

Videos Show a More Complex Scene

Several videos recorded by witnesses and surveillance cameras now offer a more detailed look at the encounter. The footage shows Good’s SUV stopped sideways across a road for about three minutes before the shooting.

During that time, other vehicles drove around the stopped SUV. One officer exited a light-coloured SUV and walked toward Good’s vehicle. The SUV backed up slightly, then returned to a sideways position in the roadway.

Another video shows Good sitting inside her vehicle, which remained still in the middle of the street. An officer walked behind the SUV toward its front. A second person, not wearing a uniform, followed closely and appeared to record the scene on a phone.

Officers Approach the Vehicle

Two federal officers arrived in a truck and stopped near the SUV. Good extended her hand out the driver’s window as the officers approached. The officers repeatedly shouted, “Get out of the car,” and “Get out of the f**king car.”

One officer pulled on the driver’s door while another moved toward the front of the SUV. At that moment, the vehicle rolled backward while one officer still held the door and another stood near the front.

The SUV then moved forward. A third officer stepped back, raised his handgun, and aimed at the driver.

Shots Fired and Crash Follows

Footage from another angle appears to show the SUV touching the officer before he fired his weapon. A separate video does not clearly show contact, but it captures the officer moving away from the front of the vehicle toward the driver’s side.

After stepping out of the vehicle’s path, the officer fired two more shots. The SUV continued forward, picked up speed, and crashed into another parked vehicle and a utility pole.

Video shows the officer placing his gun away as he and another person moved toward the crashed SUV. The officer later walked away and told others to call 911.

Investigation Continues

The videos have added detail to an incident already marked by strong official claims. Authorities continue to review the evidence as questions remain about the exact sequence of events.
