The jury in Sean “Diddy” Combs’ trial could not reach a decision on the most serious charge but agreed on four others. The trial took place in a federal court in New York. The 12 jurors announced they found Diddy guilty or not guilty on four charges but remain stuck on the racketeering count. This charge carries a possible life sentence.
The courtroom was tense as Diddy, 55, sat quietly with his head down and hands folded. His lawyers supported him closely. The jury will continue their talks on Wednesday morning.
Diddy has pleaded not guilty to all five charges. These include sex trafficking, racketeering, and transporting people for prostitution. Over two months, the jury heard testimony from 34 witnesses. These witnesses included Diddy’s ex-girlfriends, former employees, male escorts, and federal agents.
On Tuesday afternoon, the jury shared their partial verdict. They could not agree on racketeering because opinions split strongly between jurors. Some stood firm for conviction, others for acquittal.
Judge Arun Subramanian listened to arguments from both the prosecution and defense. He then urged the jurors to keep trying for a unanimous decision. The jury’s decision on the four agreed charges remains secret for now.
The prosecution asked the judge for an “Allen charge.” This is a special instruction that encourages jurors in a deadlock to try harder to reach agreement. But Allen charges are controversial. Some say they can pressure jurors to change honest views just to end the trial.
The jury will return on Wednesday. They might also meet on July 3, despite the court usually closing early for the July 4 holiday.
Legal expert Robert Mintz, a former federal prosecutor, said the jury’s quick agreement on four counts might be a good sign for the prosecution. But he added that the racketeering charge was always the toughest one to prove.
“To convict on racketeering, the prosecution must show Diddy led a criminal group planning at least two crimes over several years,” Mintz explained.
“This charge is complex and mostly used in organized crime cases. It’s not surprising the jury finds it difficult,” he added.
