The devastating wildfires in Pacific Palisades have left a trail of destruction, claiming numerous homes, including that of Milo Ventimiglia, star of This Is Us. Among the losses in his charred residence was a poignant reminder of new beginnings—the crib he had recently set up for his unborn child.
Captured by CBS cameras, Ventimiglia stood amidst the ruins of what was once his kitchen, gazing at the devastation across his neighborhood. Reflecting on the experience, he shared, “Your heart just breaks.”
Ventimiglia, his pregnant wife Jarah Mariano, and their dog evacuated on Tuesday, watching in anguish as security footage showed flames engulfing their home. “There’s this moment of shock where you realize, ‘This is real. This is happening,’” he recalled. Eventually, the couple chose to stop watching the heartbreaking footage.
Firefighters continued to battle the flames on Friday, taking advantage of a temporary lull in the strong winds that have fueled the inferno. In the aftermath, several organizations have stepped forward to provide aid, including a $15 million pledge from the Walt Disney Company to support relief and rebuilding efforts.
Stars Grapple with the Loss of Their Homes
For Ventimiglia, the destruction held an eerie parallel to his This Is Us character, Jack Pearson, who tragically succumbed to smoke inhalation after a house fire. “It’s not lost on me—life imitating art,” he remarked somberly.
His co-star Mandy Moore also faced a close call. The Eaton fire, which swept through Altadena, left parts of her home standing but uninhabitable. Her husband’s music studio, along with his instruments, was completely destroyed.
Elsewhere, actor Mel Gibson confirmed through his publicist that his home was “completely gone.” Gibson shared the news during an appearance on Joe Rogan’s podcast.
The wildfires have displaced thousands, with at least 10 fatalities reported and widespread destruction of structures and vehicles. Over 150,000 people remain under evacuation orders.
Among the affected was actor Miles Teller, whose home with wife Keleigh was reduced to rubble. Keleigh shared before-and-after images of their property on Instagram, expressing gratitude to first responders and urging others to evacuate promptly. “We will come back stronger than ever,” she wrote, lamenting that she hadn’t retrieved her wedding dress before fleeing.
Veteran actor Billy Crystal and his wife lost their home of 45 years, while other celebrities, including Paris Hilton, Jeff Bridges, Cary Elwes, and Jhené Aiko, also reported the destruction of their residences. Haley Joel Osment revealed he had lost everything in the Altadena fires. On Instagram, he wrote, “I’m heartbroken for the thousands suffering losses. This town, with its unique charm, is forever changed. Thank you to everyone who has reached out and offered help.”
Disney’s $15 Million Pledge
The Walt Disney Company has committed $15 million to wildfire relief efforts. Announced on Friday, the funds will support organizations like the American Red Cross, the Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation, and the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank.
Disney CEO Bob Iger emphasized the company’s connection to the community in a statement: “Walt Disney came to Los Angeles with little more than his limitless imagination, making this city his home and the birthplace of extraordinary storytelling. We are proud to assist this resilient and vibrant community during this time of need.”
Benefit Concert for Wildfire Relief Announced
A star-studded benefit concert, FIREAID, is scheduled to take place at the Intuit Dome, home of the Los Angeles Clippers, on January 30. Organized by prominent figures in the music industry, including the Azoff family, in collaboration with Live Nation and AEG Presents, the event aims to raise funds for wildfire victims and support initiatives to prevent future disasters.
While the concert lineup and ticket details are yet to be announced, organizers promise a meaningful event to aid recovery and bolster community resilience.
As Southern California begins to grapple with the long road to recovery, the outpouring of support from individuals, organizations, and the entertainment industry underscores a shared commitment to rebuild stronger than ever.
