Former U.S. President Donald Trump left the G7 summit earlier than expected, saying he had to return home for important matters. While preparing to leave, he told reporters, “You probably see what I see. I have to be back as soon as I can.” His comment seemed to hint at the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran and possible talks with Iranian officials.

Trump added, “I wish I could stay for tomorrow,” as he stood with other leaders for their traditional group photo. “But they understand, this is big stuff,” he explained.

Summit host responds

Prime Minister Mark Carney, who hosted the summit, appreciated Trump’s visit and understood the reason for his early exit. “I’m very grateful for the president’s presence. And I fully understand why he’s returning,” Carney said. His spokesperson Emily Williams confirmed that Trump had informed the prime minister through official channels before the public announcement.

Concerns about Trump’s role

Before the summit, some leaders thought Trump might create tension during the talks. They hoped to get him on board with their united stance on several global issues — especially the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war and trade disputes like tariffs. Now that Trump has left early, it’s unclear whether those talks made progress or got left behind.

Trade deal with the U.K.

Despite the early departure, Trump said he was pleased with what he accomplished. He signed a trade deal with the United Kingdom and mentioned ongoing talks with other countries. Before heading to the airport, he planned to attend one final dinner with the other leaders.

Positive final words

“I tell you, I loved it,” Trump said about the summit. “And I think we got a lot done.” He noted that the relationships with the other world leaders were strong and respectful. “We had just a really great relationship with everybody. And it’s really nice,” he added before leaving for Washington, D.C.

Uncertainty ahead

Trump’s early exit raises questions about whether the G7 leaders will continue without him on shared plans or if his absence will slow down the progress. For now, the summit continues, but without one of its most high-profile participants.
