Former president Donald Trump broke sharply with longtime ally Marjorie Taylor Greene on Friday, ending his support for the Georgia lawmaker after she criticized his efforts to block the release of files linked to Jeffrey Epstein. The split marked a dramatic turn in a relationship that once stood as one of the strongest in Republican politics.
Trump Pulls His Endorsement
Trump announced his decision on Truth Social late Friday. “I am withdrawing my support and endorsement of ‘Congresswoman’ Marjorie Taylor Greene, of the great state of Georgia,” he wrote. He also mocked her tone, saying, “All I see ‘Wacky’ Marjorie do is COMPLAIN, COMPLAIN, COMPLAIN!”
Trump added that he would back a primary challenger “if the right person runs,” signalling he now sees Greene as a political burden rather than an ally.
Greene represents Georgia’s 14th District and has supported Trump for years, often defending him during controversy. Her break with him surprised many Republicans at a time when the party faces internal divisions.
Greene Says Trump Is Focusing on the Wrong Issues
The conflict worsened earlier Friday when Greene said Trump should stop trying to block the release of the Epstein files. She told Politico that Americans feel squeezed by rising costs and that Trump should address economic stress instead of shielding documents.
“It’s insanely the wrong direction to go,” she said. “The five-alarm fire is healthcare and affordability for Americans. And that’s where the focus should be.”
She added that releasing the files should be simple. “Releasing the Epstein files is the easiest thing in the world. Just release it all,” she said, adding that the public deserves full transparency.
Greene said she could not understand why Trump would try to slow or stop the release. “To spend any effort trying to stop it makes – it just doesn’t make sense to me.”
A Growing Divide Between Two Former Allies
Tension between the two has grown for months. Greene has criticized the administration’s focus on foreign policy, accusing Trump of ignoring soaring prices at home. Trump recently responded that Greene had “lost her way.”
Greene fired back on X, saying, “The only way is through Jesus,” adding that she is working to live by her faith and has not “lost” anything.
Greene has also challenged her own party’s leadership. She criticized House Speaker Mike Johnson during the recent government shutdown and sided with Democrats on healthcare subsidies—an unusual move for a Republican.
Greene Breaks With the Party on Foreign Policy
The congresswoman has also taken positions far outside traditional GOP lines. She opposed sending “billions of dollars” in weapons to Ukraine. She also condemned Israel’s campaign in Gaza as “genocide,” breaking with the party’s long-standing support for the Israeli government.
Trump’s return to office has only widened the gap. Greene, 51, now frequently criticizes decisions coming from the White House, creating friction with both Republicans and Trump loyalists.
What Comes Next in the GOP?
The fight between Trump and Greene adds new tension to a party already divided on spending, foreign policy, and the role of populist voices in Congress. Greene’s seat remains safe, but a Trump-backed challenger could change the landscape in her district.
For now, the two former allies stand on opposite sides of a widening political divide.
