Ontario Premier Doug Ford said a group of masked men tried stealing a vehicle from his home early Tuesday morning. He shared the story during a press conference, where he also criticized the current bail system.
Police Catch the Suspects
Ford said the incident happened at around 12:30 a.m. Officers responded quickly and chased the suspects. They managed to arrest them before the theft could happen. The Premier praised the police for their fast action and bravery.
Ford Slams Bail System
Speaking at the press conference, Ford expressed frustration with the justice system. He said criminals are becoming bolder and called the current situation “lawless.” Ford stressed that repeat offenders should not be allowed back on the streets so easily.
“These guys feel like they can do whatever they want,” Ford said. “There’s no fear of the law anymore.”
Police Confirm Arrests
Toronto police confirmed that they arrested four people in connection with the attempted theft. Two of them are teenagers. Officers said they caught the suspects with tools commonly used for car theft.
They also had an electronic device used to hack into modern car systems and a master key designed to unlock and start different vehicles.
Car Thefts on the Rise
Ontario, especially Toronto and nearby areas, has seen a spike in car thefts recently. Thieves often target expensive vehicles, and many of them use high-tech tools to bypass security systems. Some of the stolen cars are shipped overseas.
Ford said the trend is growing out of control. “It’s like a free-for-all out there,” he added.
Ford Demands Action
The Premier urged lawmakers to take serious action. He wants tougher laws for people involved in these kinds of crimes and stricter rules for granting bail. Ford also pushed for better technology to protect vehicles and more support for police.
“We have hardworking families who save up to buy a car, and then in the middle of the night, someone just takes it,” he said.
Community Reactions
Many people have shown support for Ford after the incident. Some are also calling for faster changes in how the justice system handles young offenders and car theft cases.
Residents in Toronto say they are scared and tired of feeling unsafe in their own neighborhoods. Some are even installing extra security cameras and anti-theft systems to protect their vehicles.
Ongoing Investigation
Toronto police are still investigating the case. They are trying to find out if the suspects are part of a larger group. Authorities said this type of theft is often organized by bigger criminal networks.
