Craving the rich, savoury taste of soup dumplings but short on time? A new online food trend offers a quick way to enjoy those familiar flavours without folding each dumpling by hand.

Over the past two months, home cooks across social media have embraced a dish now widely called “dumpling lasagna.” The idea first gained attention after creator April Liang shared a simple method to turn classic soup dumpling ingredients into a layered bake. The recipe promises the taste of xiao long bao in about 30 minutes.

Inspired by Xiao Long Bao

Traditional soup dumplings, known as xiao long bao, take skill and patience. Cooks must carefully pleat each wrapper to seal the broth and filling inside. For busy weeknights, many people rely on takeout or frozen versions instead.

Dumpling lasagna removes that extra step. Rather than wrapping individual dumplings, the recipe layers familiar ingredients in a baking dish, much like an Italian lasagna.

The Three Key Ingredients

Most versions of the dish rely on three main elements: napa cabbage, store-bought wonton wrappers and seasoned ground pork.

The pork mixture typically includes minced garlic, ginger, scallions, soy sauce, white pepper, rice vinegar and sesame oil. Cooks can adjust the flavours to suit their taste. Some recommend cooking a small spoonful of the mixture first to check seasoning before assembling the full dish.

The recipe allows flexibility. Missing one ingredient does not ruin the result, making it approachable for home cooks.

How the Dish Comes Together

To build the lasagna, cooks layer ground pork, cabbage leaves and wonton wrappers in a heat-safe dish. The wonton wrappers should be dipped briefly in water before placing them in the layers. This softens them and helps create the desired texture.

Before adding the final layer, cooks pour a small amount of water or chicken broth into the dish. This step helps create moisture during cooking, giving the finished dish a juicy quality similar to soup dumplings.

Rather than baking in an oven, the dish steams on the stovetop. The baking dish sits inside a larger pot filled halfway with water. A lid traps steam and cooks the layers evenly. The pork must reach an internal temperature of at least 160 degrees to ensure it is fully cooked.

Finishing Touches

Once done, dumpling lasagna benefits from classic toppings. Chili crisp, soy sauce and chopped green onions add flavour and colour. The result looks like lasagna but tastes like a comforting bowl of dumplings.

The trend appeals to those who enjoy Asian-inspired flavours but prefer quick, manageable recipes. While it does not replace traditional xiao long bao, dumpling lasagna offers a creative shortcut that many home cooks find both satisfying and fun.
