An unexpected earthquake shook the US East Coast, reaching millions from New York to rural New England, yet causing minimal damage. The tremor, registering a preliminary magnitude of 4.8, startled an area not accustomed to such seismic activity. The earthquake, originating near Whitehouse Station, New Jersey, prompted inspections of infrastructure and disruptions to transportation services, including flight diversions and delays. However, experts emphasized that the earthquake's magnitude was not significant enough to cause substantial harm. Despite the rarity of earthquakes in the region, seismic events have occurred periodically over the years, with the most notable being a 5.8-magnitude quake in Mineral, Virginia, in 2011. Overall, while the earthquake rattled residents and led to some disruptions, the East Coast escaped major consequences.
