Ecuadorian security forces finally captured the country’s most-wanted drug lord, Adolfo “Fito” Macías, after an 18-month pursuit. His daring prison escape in January 2024 had triggered a nationwide crackdown and led President Daniel Noboa to declare an internal armed conflict against violent gangs.
A Breakthrough in the Manhunt
On June 25, 2025, the long chase reached a turning point.
Intelligence led authorities to a luxurious residence in the Manabí province, known as a key base for Macías’ criminal network, Los Choneros. This tip marked the start of an intense mission to locate the elusive fugitive.
Sealed Off and Surrounded
Security forces, composed of police and military units, swiftly sealed a 15-block perimeter around the target area. This precaution ensured no one could interrupt the operation or allow Macías to flee. The raid stretched for 10 hours, requiring coordination, stealth, and careful surveillance.
Inside the Drug Lord’s Hidden Fortress
The property turned out to be a lavish villa in progress. It featured modern amenities—an in-ground pool, a private gym, premium appliances, and a game room. Marble-style walls added to its grandeur. But what stood out most was a hidden section beneath the house—a bunker disguised by a seamless floor panel.
According to Interior Minister John Reimberg, the secret space had air conditioning and a concealed hatch. It was specifically built to shelter Macías if authorities got close. Special forces entered and began probing every inch of the house using advanced tools.
The Telltale Sign from Above
During aerial surveillance, a suspicious crop field behind the villa caught attention. Experts believed it might hide an underground escape route. The team brought in excavators to dig near the field. As digging began, Macías grew anxious. His hiding spot wasn’t as invincible as he thought.
The Moment of Capture
Fearing the collapse of the bunker roof, Macías made a crucial mistake. He opened the hatch and tried to exit—only to find soldiers already waiting. He had no choice but to surrender. He was quickly restrained, pinned down, and ordered to identify himself.
“I’m Adolfo Macías Villamar,” he stated, lying face down, surrounded by armed forces.
End of the Road
Four other individuals guarding Macías were also detained. All were part of his security team. After the dramatic arrest, Macías was transferred to the Manta Air Base, then flown to Guayaquil.
Authorities moved him to La Roca—Ecuador’s highest-security prison, located behind the very complex from which he had escaped last year.
A photo released by the interior ministry showed Macías alone inside his cell, confirming that the notorious gang boss was back behind bars.
What’s Next for Fito?
President Noboa has confirmed efforts are underway to extradite Macías to the United States. He faces serious charges there, including drug trafficking and illegal arms possession.
The government is now waiting for an official response from U.S. authorities.
From Gang Leader to Prisoner Again
Adolfo Macías, also known as “Fito,” is believed to be the only surviving founder of Los Choneros. He was first convicted in 2011 of homicides and drug crimes. Although he briefly escaped in 2013, he was recaptured within months. Over the years, he became known for managing gang finances and laundering money from behind bars.
In 2024, officials were preparing to move him to a more secure facility. That information likely tipped him off and triggered his daring escape. Now, after more than a year on the run, the kingpin has finally run out of options.
