The Edmonton Oilers have made key changes to their defensive lineup, adding Jake Walman and welcoming back Mattias Ekholm. These moves seem to be paying off, as the team delivered a dominant 7-1 victory over the Utah Hockey Club on Tuesday. The improved defence could be the boost the Oilers need for a strong playoff run.
Defence Steps Up After Rough Stretch
Head coach Kris Knoblauch acknowledged the team’s struggles earlier this season but praised the recent turnaround. “After the break, we hit rock bottom. We played terribly and were outmatched in every way,” Knoblauch admitted. “But we’ve improved a lot. Our team defence has tightened up, and that’s helping our offence as well.”
The team’s defensive focus was evident in their latest game, where their backchecking and ability to force turnovers stood out. This shift in performance has raised speculation about Walman’s role on the team.
Walman Adjusts to New Role
Jake Walman, a left-handed defenseman, is open to playing on the right side alongside Darnell Nurse. He’s embracing the high expectations in Edmonton. “There’s a standard here—you feel it as soon as you walk into the room,” Walman said. “I’m excited to be part of this team.”
His versatility adds depth to the Oilers’ defensive core, and his ability to adapt could make a significant impact as the season progresses.
Ekholm Returns, Adds Stability
Meanwhile, Mattias Ekholm is thrilled to be back after missing time due to illness and a lower-body injury. “Watching from the sidelines was tough. You always want to be out there, especially at this point in the season,” Ekholm said.
His return brings stability to the penalty kill and overall defence. Knoblauch highlighted his importance, stating, “He’s an exceptional penalty killer. His absence left a big gap in our lineup.”
Ekholm wasted no time making an impact, logging a goal and two assists in his first game back. He also provided much-needed guidance to Evan Bouchard on the top defensive pairing.
Looking Ahead to Playoffs
The Oilers are eyeing a deep playoff run, and a strong defence will be critical. Ekholm’s ability to shut down top opponents while supporting offensive transitions makes him a key asset. “He defends well, but he also sets up guys like Leon (Draisaitl) and Connor (McDavid) with great breakout passes,” Knoblauch said.
Darnell Nurse echoed this sentiment, emphasizing how the defensive unit is coming together. “The six of us are building chemistry, and it’s exciting to be part of this blue line.”
Nurse also brought a physical edge to the game, engaging in a fight with Jack McBain. “I was just playing my game,” he said. This added intensity could be the extra push the Oilers need in the final stretch of the season.
With improved chemistry and newfound confidence, Edmonton’s defense is shaping up just in time for the playoffs.
