An 81-year-old model aimed to become the oldest contestant in the Miss Universe pageant but faced stiff competition from younger participants in the Miss Universe Korea event.
Choi Soon-hwa, dressed in a beautiful beaded white gown, confidently walked across the stage and participated in a singing contest during the pageant, held Monday at a hotel in Seoul. Although she did not win the crown, she was honored with the "best dresser" award for her stunning outfit.
The title went to 22-year-old Han Ariel, a fashion student, who will represent Korea in the Miss Universe pageant in Mexico City this November.
Choi, a former hospital care worker who began her modeling career in her 70s, was among 32 finalists announced earlier this month. Before the pageant, she shared her thoughts with The Associated Press, saying, “Even at this age, I had the courage to grab onto an opportunity and take on a challenge. I want people to see me and realize that you can live healthier and find joy in life by pursuing what you love and striving to achieve your dreams.”
A year ago, Choi wouldn't have been able to compete as Miss Universe had restricted participation to women aged 18 to 28. However, this year, the age limit was lifted to make the competition more inclusive and diverse.
To further broaden participation, organizers of the Korean pageant eliminated the swimsuit competition and relaxed eligibility requirements regarding education, height, and language skills, welcoming more women to join.
