At York University's recent Fall Convocation ceremony, 87-year-old Hortense Anglin made history as the oldest graduate to walk across the stage. She proudly received her Honours degree in Religious Studies, marking a significant milestone in her educational journey.

Reflecting on the moment, Anglin expressed her gratitude, saying, "Each person took the time to greet me and to congratulate me on my achievement. I am humbled." This was not her first time experiencing such joy at graduation; in 2022, she had celebrated her Bachelor of Arts at the age of 85, which she described as equally joyful, noting, "They were elated to see a grey-haired lady."

Hortense's educational journey began more than 50 years ago when she graduated from high school in Jamaica. Although she initially intended to pursue further education, life took a different turn when her husband, with whom she shared 52 years, fell ill and passed away in 2014. This loss put her dreams on hold, but she eventually found inspiration to return to her studies.

Her younger sister, Osra Lindo, played a pivotal role in rekindling Hortense's educational aspirations. After learning about York University's Bridging Program for Women, which helps women overcome obstacles to higher education, Osra encouraged Hortense to take the leap. This program was instrumental in helping her resume her studies.

Determined to make the most of this opportunity, Anglin dove headfirst into her academic pursuits. "I just went head-first into all things that were required. The more I learn, the more I want to learn; the more courses I do, the more courses I need to do," she shared. In 2018, she began her journey in Gender and Women's Studies but later switched to focus on Religious Studies.

Her passion for learning about different faiths led her to explore a variety of subjects, including the Hebrew Bible and the gospels. "I'm doing these religious studies courses. I want to learn about the religions of the world, and the world is a big place," she explained. This curiosity about different cultures and beliefs showcases her desire to broaden her understanding of the world.

Anglin's remarkable journey serves as an inspiration to many, especially those who may hesitate to pursue their dreams later in life. She encourages others to take risks and fill their lives with what they love. Her advice is simple yet profound: "Fill your day with what you love to do, occupy your mind. If you don't use it, you are going to lose it."

Hortense Anglin's story is a testament to resilience and the power of education, proving that it's never too late to chase your dreams. Her achievements remind us all of the importance of lifelong learning and staying curious, regardless of age.
