Elijah Wood has joined the conversation about the surprisingly low salaries earned by the cast of The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Despite the films grossing nearly $3 billion worldwide, the actors received modest paychecks. However, Wood insists that the experience was worth far more than money.
No Big Paydays for the Cast
Cate Blanchett, who played Galadriel, made headlines last year when she joked that the cast was paid “nothing” for their work on the trilogy. Appearing on Watch What Happens Live, she said, “I basically got free sandwiches and got to keep my [elf] ears.”
Speaking to Business Insider at the 2025 Texas Film Awards, Wood confirmed his “Rings” salary was not a big one, despite leading the trilogy as Frodo. However, the actor doesn’t mind at all.
Why the Cast Earned Modest Salaries
Wood explained that since director Peter Jackson filmed all three movies back-to-back, there was never a chance for actors to renegotiate contracts based on the franchise’s box office success.
"We weren’t making one movie and then renegotiating for the next," Wood said. "It wasn’t the kind of lucrative scenario where you could just rest easy for the rest of your life."
The decision to film all three movies at once was a huge risk for New Line Cinema. To keep costs low, the studio offered lower salaries to the cast. But Wood believes this gamble paid off for everyone involved.
More Than Just a Paycheck
The topic of Lord of the Rings salaries has come up before. Orlando Bloom (Legolas) once revealed he earned just $175,000 for all three films. Sean Astin (Samwise Gamgee) later said his salary was around $250,000.
When asked if his pay was similar to Astin’s, Wood neither confirmed nor denied, saying, “That figure isn’t accurate, and honestly, it doesn’t matter.” He emphasized that the trilogy had a priceless impact on his career and life.
A Once-in-a-Lifetime Experience
Wood also responded to Blanchett’s sandwich joke, calling it hilarious and assuring fans that there was no bitterness among the cast.
"Statements like that aren’t made with any kind of ire," he said. "Being a part of those films was an honor, and they represent some of the best experiences of my life."
Despite the modest paychecks, it’s clear that for Wood and his co-stars, being part of The Lord of the Rings was far more valuable than money.
