A Gripping New Drama Unfolds. Hulu’s latest drama, Good American Family is inspired by a real-life adoption story that captivated the nation. Starring Grey’s Anatomy actress Ellen Pompeo, the series draws from multiple perspectives, threats, and accusations surrounding a controversial case.
While the show doesn’t directly name Natalia Grace Barnett or her adoptive family, it mirrors their shocking story. The plot follows a Midwestern couple who adopt a girl with a rare form of dwarfism, only to question her real age and intentions. What starts as an act of kindness turns into a nightmare as suspicions arise.
The Real Story Behind the Show
The case of Natalia Grace Barnett became a media sensation in 2014. Adopted in 2010 by Indiana couple Kristine and Michael Barnett, Natalia was believed to be six or seven years old. However, the Barnetts later claimed she was much older and accused her of deceiving them.
Diagnosed with spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia congenita, a rare genetic disorder affecting her stature, Natalia’s small size aligned with her birth records. Yet, her adoptive parents insisted she displayed adult characteristics, including having a menstrual cycle. They further alleged she was mentally ill, violent, and plotting to harm the family.
A legal battle ensued, leading to a judge reclassifying Natalia’s age from 11 to 22 years old. Despite medical experts stating she was a child, the Barnetts moved her into an apartment alone in 2013 before relocating to Canada. The couple later faced child neglect charges, which were eventually dismissed.
Where Is Natalia Grace Now?
Now in her 20s or 30s—depending on which records are believed—Natalia is focused on rebuilding her life. In a recent interview, she expressed gratitude for her survival and optimism for the future.

She is currently studying for her GED and aspires to become a teacher. Living with a supportive family, Natalia enjoys music, is learning to drive, and is preparing for upcoming surgeries related to her condition. She has also found love with her boyfriend, Neil.
“I feel free,” she shared, reflecting on her journey.
