Elon Musk has launched Grokipedia, a new crowdsourced online encyclopedia that aims to challenge Wikipedia’s dominance in the world of digital knowledge.
The billionaire entrepreneur announced the launch on social media, declaring that Grokipedia.com is “now live.” He described its mission as delivering “the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.”
A Direct Challenge to Wikipedia
Musk has long been critical of Wikipedia, accusing it of bias and calling its content “propaganda.” He has even urged people to stop donating to the nonprofit Wikimedia Foundation, which operates Wikipedia.
In September, Musk revealed that his artificial intelligence company, xAI, was developing an alternative platform — and Grokipedia appears to be that vision realized.
The new site features a minimalist design, showing only a search bar that invites users to explore topics of interest. According to its homepage, Grokipedia already hosts over 885,000 articles — a modest number compared to Wikipedia’s more than seven million English-language entries.
Built with AI, Inspired by Crowdsourcing
Users can look up a range of topics — from Taylor Swift to the baseball World Series or Buckingham Palace — much like Wikipedia. However, the process behind how Grokipedia’s content is created remains unclear.
Early reports suggest the platform is powered by the same xAI model that runs Musk’s chatbot, Grok. Some entries also appear to be adapted from Wikipedia, raising questions about originality and sourcing.
The Wikimedia Foundation, which manages Wikipedia, said it is “still in the process of understanding how Grokipedia works.”
AI’s Reliance on Human Knowledge
Wikipedia’s massive database has long served as a cornerstone for training artificial intelligence models, including Musk’s competitors like ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini. The Wikimedia Foundation emphasized this dependence in its recent statement.
“This human-created knowledge is what AI companies rely on to generate content; even Grokipedia needs Wikipedia to exist,” it said.
Musk’s new platform enters a tense moment for Wikipedia, which has faced growing criticism from political groups claiming ideological bias. In August, U.S. Republican lawmakers launched an investigation into alleged manipulation within Wikipedia’s editing process, suggesting it could influence not just public perception but also AI models built using its data.
A Question of Credibility
One of the biggest differences between the two platforms lies in their editorial transparency. Wikipedia requires its volunteer editors to cite primary sources for nearly every claim, with unverified statements open to challenge or removal.
By contrast, Grokipedia appears to have less rigorous sourcing. For example, its entry on the Chola Dynasty includes just three linked sources — compared to Wikipedia’s 113 citations and dozens of referenced books.
Interestingly, Grokipedia’s own article on Wikipedia accuses the site of having “systemic ideological biases,” particularly “a left-leaning slant in coverage of political figures and topics.”
Wikimedia Responds
In response, the Wikimedia Foundation defended its long-standing editorial standards. “Unlike newer projects, Wikipedia’s strengths are clear,” it stated. “It has transparent policies, rigorous volunteer oversight, and a strong culture of continuous improvement. Wikipedia is written to inform billions without promoting a particular point of view.”
While Grokipedia positions itself as a truth-focused alternative, its credibility and structure are still under scrutiny. Whether Musk’s newest venture can truly rival the world’s largest online encyclopedia remains to be seen.
