Tensions have escalated between former U.S. President Donald Trump and tech billionaire Elon Musk, following a heated exchange over America’s electric vehicle (EV) policy and massive federal spending.
Trump, responding to Musk’s sharp criticism of his so-called “One Big Beautiful Bill”, took to Truth Social with fiery warnings and personal jabs. The dispute has sparked political drama and raised questions over subsidies, space missions, and the future of U.S. tech funding.
Elon Musk Slams 'Big Beautiful Bill'
The controversy began when Musk voiced strong opposition to a new Congressional bill, calling it financially reckless. According to him, the legislation could raise the national debt by a staggering $5 trillion.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Musk called the bill “insane spending” and criticized U.S. lawmakers for prioritizing pork-barrel politics over public welfare.
“We live in a one-party country – the PORKY PIG PARTY!” Musk exclaimed. “Time for a new political party that actually cares about the people,” he added.
Musk's posts quickly gained attention, igniting debate across political and tech circles.
Trump Responds: No Rockets, No SpaceX, No EVs?
Not one to stay silent, Trump fired back on Truth Social. In a blistering post, he reminded Musk that he had always opposed the EV mandate — a policy that encourages, and at times enforces, a nationwide shift to electric vehicles.
“Elon Musk knew, long before he endorsed me, that I was against the EV Mandate,” Trump stated. “It’s ridiculous. Electric cars are fine, but no one should be forced to buy one.”
But Trump didn’t stop there. He issued a bold warning: if Musk continues to challenge his policies, there could be major consequences for his companies.
“No more Rocket launches, Satellites, or Electric Car Production,” Trump declared. “Our country would save a FORTUNE.”
Trump even suggested that DOGE — possibly referring to the meme cryptocurrency often linked to Musk — should be tasked with reviewing Musk’s business activities.
Accusations of Subsidy Dependence
In another sharp blow, Trump questioned Musk’s success without government aid. He claimed that no one has received more federal subsidies than the Tesla and SpaceX CEO.
“Without subsidies, Elon would probably have to close up shop and head back home to South Africa,” Trump wrote.
These statements reignited old arguments around Musk’s reliance on public funding, despite his image as a self-made innovator. While Musk has often credited innovation and engineering excellence, critics point to billions in grants, tax breaks, and government contracts received by his companies.
EV Mandate Debate Intensifies
At the center of this clash is the controversial EV mandate — a policy designed to push the automotive industry toward cleaner energy. Trump has long opposed such regulations, favoring a free-market approach. Musk, while a pioneer in EV development, has shown increasing concern over what he sees as government overreach and irresponsible spending.
Their feud highlights the growing divide between innovation-driven billionaires and traditional political leaders, especially when public funds and regulatory policies intersect.
A Billionaire Showdown with Political Ripples
The Trump-Musk showdown is more than just a personality clash — it’s a reflection of deeper national debates:
- Should electric vehicles be mandated?
- Are billionaires too dependent on subsidies?
- Is Washington spending out of control?
As both Trump and Musk maintain massive followings, this spat is likely to shape public opinion and policy discourse for months to come.
