Emissions Reduction Alberta (ERA) is stepping up its efforts to support environmental and economic goals by investing $44.4 million into 21 innovative cleantech projects. This funding comes as part of their Emerging Innovators Challenge, aimed at fostering new ideas that can help reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across the province.
ERA’s financial support covers up to 50% of each project's total costs, with grants ranging from $250,000 to $5 million. This initiative specifically targets small and medium-sized enterprises, organizations with fewer than 500 employees, and Indigenous communities that have strong proposals for cutting emissions or moving towards net-zero goals by 2050.

Among the selected projects are various startups, including Wyvern, which specializes in hyperspectral satellite imaging, and Arolytics, which provides software for emissions management. Collectively, these projects are expected to achieve a significant reduction of about 1.2 million tonnes of GHG emissions by 2030.

The total value of the funded projects is approximately $162.7 million, with contributions coming from both public and private partners. This initiative reflects ERA's commitment to fostering sustainable development in Alberta.

One standout project comes from SixRing, a biofuel company based in Calgary. They received the maximum funding of $5 million for a $55.5 million initiative aimed at building a commercial demonstration facility in Lethbridge. SixRing plans to convert nature-based materials, like canola straw, into industrial products that can replace fossil fuel-based alternatives. They expect this facility to be operational by 2025.

Another notable recipient is Wyvern, which also secured $5 million for an $18.5 million project focused on using satellite technology for wildfire prevention and detecting methane leaks. Earlier this month, Wyvern received nearly $460,000 from Prairies Economic Development Canada to launch their new system.

Arolytics, based in Calgary, is set to receive $1 million for a $2.5 million project that aims to enhance methane monitoring for oil and gas producers. Their advanced analytics will help identify patterns to better position equipment and conduct field surveys.

Since its inception in 2009, ERA has committed nearly $986 million to support 299 projects. The organization continues to play a pivotal role in promoting innovative solutions for emissions reduction in Alberta. A comprehensive list of projects funded through the Emerging Innovators Challenge can be found on the ERA website.
