More than 130 million people in the U.S. are dealing with extreme heat. Warnings and advisories cover many cities, stretching from the Southeast coast to the Midwest. The hottest conditions are expected to last through Wednesday, with no cool nights to offer a break.
Southeast Set to Feel the Worst
The worst heat on Sunday is hitting areas between Savannah, Georgia, and Virginia Beach, Virginia. Heat warnings are in place here. The heat index, which measures how hot it feels with humidity, is expected to reach 108 to 116 degrees. This makes it extremely risky to stay outdoors for long.
Midwest Also in the Danger Zone
Places like Lincoln, Nebraska, and Minneapolis, Minnesota, also face sweltering temperatures. Heat indices here are forecast between 97 and 111 degrees. People in Charleston, West Virginia, and St. Louis, Missouri, are also under warnings, with feels-like temperatures between 102 and 112 degrees.
Heat Spreads Across the Country
Other cities under advisories include Dallas, Oklahoma City, Tampa, Indianapolis, Little Rock, Kansas City, and Washington, D.C. These places may see heat index values from the upper 90s up to 110 degrees. The heat will continue into Monday and Tuesday for many areas.
Northeast Will Heat Up Early This Week
Parts of the I-95 corridor from Boston to New York City will start heating up Monday. Heat index values here are expected to reach between the mid-90s and 105. This could continue into Tuesday.
More Heat on the Way
Cities like St. Louis, Memphis, Charlotte, Savannah, and Tampa will face actual temperatures in the upper 90s or low 100s. Humid air will make it feel even hotter—between 105 and 115 degrees. This heat wave may last for several days.
No Relief at Night
Even at night, the heat will not go away. Overnight temperatures are expected to stay in the 70s or higher. That means no break from the heat, even in the early morning hours.
Extreme Risk in Southeast
From Monday through Wednesday, many areas in the Southeast face the highest possible heat risk. Cities at this extreme level include Atlanta, Charlotte, Jacksonville, and Tallahassee. The heat there will be especially dangerous.
Storms Hit the Midwest and Northeast
While some areas are baking, others are seeing storms. Central and southern Minnesota and eastern South Dakota are under a severe thunderstorm watch until midnight. Northern Minnesota and northwestern Wisconsin will remain under watch until 1 a.m. More strong storms are possible later on Sunday in parts of Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.
Storms also hit the Northeast on Sunday evening. As a result, over 1,100 flights got canceled and more than 8,000 were delayed.
