The billion-dollar sports betting boom in the U.S. has hit a major snag. A sweeping FBI investigation has led to the indictment of more than 30 people, including Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier and other NBA figures, on illegal sports betting charges. The scandal has reignited debate over the growing influence — and risks — of legal gambling in professional sports.

A Booming Industry Under Scrutiny

Since the U.S. Supreme Court legalized sports betting nationwide in 2018, the industry has exploded. What was once confined to Nevada now thrives in 38 states and Washington, D.C., with Missouri set to join on December 1.

Fans can place wagers instantly through apps like FanDuel and DraftKings, betting on everything from final scores to single plays. Stadiums, broadcasts, and even player endorsements are flooded with betting promotions.

But this growth comes with controversy. The FBI now alleges that Rozier and others used insider information to influence bets on NBA games. Rozier’s attorney insists his client “is not a gambler” and vows to fight the charges.

A separate indictment also names Portland Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups, accused of participating in a card game–fixing scheme. His attorney has declined to comment.

How Legal Sports Betting Took Off

Legalized sports betting became possible after the 2018 repeal of the Professional Amateur Sports Protection Act. Since then, the market has surged, with online platforms leading the charge.

According to the American Gaming Association, the industry generated $10 billion in revenue through the third quarter of this year — a 19% jump from last year.

Supporters argue that legal betting brings tax revenue and helps curb illegal gambling. Companies also emphasize their use of advanced technology to detect suspicious activity. FanDuel even called Thursday’s arrests “a stark contrast between legal and illegal markets.”

The Money Game: Who Wins and Who Doesn’t

Sports leagues, too, have found a lucrative partner in gambling platforms. By selling live data to betting companies, leagues earn millions.

For instance, the NBA’s partnership with Sportradar allows sportsbooks like FanDuel to use official NBA statistics. This arrangement helps drive micro-betting — wagers on minute-by-minute gameplay events — while generating profit for both leagues and betting platforms.

However, experts warn that such close ties blur ethical boundaries. “Leagues are monetizing their data while trying to police integrity. That’s a conflict,” said researcher Isaac Rose-Berman of the American Institute for Boys and Men.

Regulation Challenges Across States

Sports betting laws differ widely from state to state. Some only allow in-person betting at casinos, while others let fans bet from their phones anywhere.

But regulation becomes trickier when players or coaches are involved. Major leagues, including the NBA, NFL, and MLB, prohibit betting on their own games — though betting on unrelated sports is sometimes allowed.

While legal markets can flag suspicious activity, experts say the micro-bet structure makes manipulation harder to detect. Marketing professor Wayne Taylor notes, “There are so many bets, so many players — it’s easy to hide.”

Prop Bets: A New Frontier for Risk

Prop, or proposition bets, let fans wager on player-specific outcomes — like how many points or rebounds someone will get.

Investigators say this kind of bet lies at the heart of the Rozier case. During a March 23, 2023, game with Charlotte Hornets, Rozier played under 10 minutes, scored modestly, and missed the rest of the season. His unexpected absence led to massive betting losses — and raised suspicions of manipulation.

Prop bets have become a growing concern for leagues. Earlier this year, Ohio’s governor pushed to ban such wagers after MLB investigated two players for gambling-related issues.

The Human Cost of Sports Betting

Behind the flashy ads and app bonuses lies a troubling reality — gambling addiction. Experts warn that constant exposure, round-the-clock access, and aggressive promotions are creating a new wave of dependency.

“The normalization and gamified design of betting apps have led to a surge in risky behavior,” said Taylor.

Studies show that young men in low-income areas are particularly vulnerable. Rose-Berman adds that while most gamblers lose small amounts, a small group of heavy bettors face devastating losses.

The Bottom Line

The FBI’s NBA betting probe has exposed the fragile balance between entertainment and exploitation in America’s sports betting boom.

As leagues, platforms, and regulators grapple with the fallout, one question looms large: Can sports betting stay fair — or has the game already been rigged by greed?
