Security forces stand outside the National Court of Justice following a hearing for the extradition of Ecuadorean gang leader Jose Adolfo Macías, known as "Fito," who accepted the court's request to be extradited to the United States to face drug and gun charges, in Quito, Ecuador.

Jose Adolfo Macías, alias "Fito," Ecuador's most feared drug kingpin, has agreed to be extradited to the United States. This decision follows a formal hearing at Ecuador's National Court of Justice. US authorities are seeking him on multiple charges, including drug trafficking and weapons smuggling.

Extradition Approved After Legal Counsel

Fito's legal team in both Ecuador and the US played a pivotal role in this move. His American attorney, Alexei Schacht, confirmed that the extradition decision was based on advice from Macías’s Ecuadorian lawyer. “We are working hard to protect his rights and support his family,” Schacht stated in a note to CNN.

A Jailbreak That Shook Ecuador

The name “Fito” became internationally known after his dramatic prison escape in January 2024. His flight triggered widespread violence and exposed deep cracks in Ecuador’s prison and security systems. Just days after he vanished, armed attackers took over a live television broadcast, holding the crew hostage on air.

The chaos prompted newly elected President Daniel Noboa to take immediate action. He declared an “internal armed conflict” and officially classified Fito’s gang, Los Choneros, along with 21 other groups, as terrorist organizations.

The Man Behind Los Choneros

Jose Adolfo Macías is believed to be the last surviving founding member of Los Choneros, Ecuador's most powerful criminal syndicate. Although little is known about his early life, his rise in the underworld has been well-documented.

Fito was known for his ability to move illicit money and maintain influence even behind bars. His 2024 escape only reinforced his reputation, as did reports that he lived lavishly while incarcerated. According to sources, he had expanded his prison cell, hosted parties, and was frequently visited by female guests.

Luxury Living—Even While in Hiding

Fito was finally recaptured on June 25, 2025, after more than a year on the run. Ecuadorian armed forces found him hiding underground beneath a luxury villa in Manabí province. The hideout wasn’t just functional—it was extravagant. Authorities discovered a private gym, marble interiors, and a game room.

The tip-off came from aerial surveillance, which spotted unusual terrain behind the property. When the military began excavating the site, Fito panicked. Fearing a collapse of his underground bunker, he surrendered by opening the hatch and climbing into the hands of awaiting soldiers.

Extradition Plans Confirmed

President Noboa wasted no time following the arrest. He made clear his intention to have Fito face justice beyond Ecuador’s borders. The move to extradite him to the United States is seen as a significant step toward dismantling Ecuador's violent drug networks.

Fito’s transfer will allow US prosecutors to try him for trafficking narcotics and firearms across international lines.

A Turning Point in Ecuador’s Drug War

Fito’s capture and forthcoming extradition may mark a major turning point in Ecuador’s ongoing fight against organized crime. With Los Choneros weakened and international cooperation strengthening, Ecuador's government hopes this sends a clear message to criminal groups.

For now, Fito waits in custody, with his next stop likely a courtroom in the United States. The world watches closely as one of Latin America’s most dangerous drug lords prepares to face justice abroad.
