Customs officials in France are urging people to avoid consuming “aphrodisiac honey” after a significant number of illegal honey products were seized in the country. These honey products, which are illegally imported, have been found to contain medicinal substances used to treat erectile dysfunction.

The warning, issued in a statement on Monday, comes after French customs officers reported a surge in seizures of these products in 2024. The rise in these illegal goods has raised concerns, especially after one of the largest ever seizures took place in November 2024. During this incident, 860,000 of these honey products, weighing a total of 13 metric tonnes (around 14.3 tons), were found in a shipment at the port of Marseille. This shipment originated from Malaysia, adding to the ongoing worry about the illegal trade of these products. In a separate investigation, authorities also confiscated more than 238 kilograms (525 pounds) of the honey.

The adulterated honey products are typically made from natural honey mixed with medications like sildenafil and tadalafil, which are used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED). ED is a common condition, particularly in older men, that refers to the inability to get or maintain an erection. These medications, which are used to address ED, are regulated and must be prescribed by doctors in many countries, including France.

The honey products, which have been found to be adulterated with these drugs, mainly come from countries such as Malaysia, Turkey, and Tunisia. Some of these products arrive in large containers via container ships, while others are sold in smaller quantities through online markets. The products, branded with names like Black Horse and Bio Max, are typically packaged as shots or sticks. They are then sold illegally in places like nightclubs, where they are often advertised as providing various health benefits.

Officials have raised alarm about the potential dangers these products pose to consumers. “Buyers and users are unaware or underestimate the potential dangers of these products,” the statement read. The adulterated honey may contain active ingredients such as sildenafil and tadalafil, which are used in ED treatments. However, these products do not disclose the amounts of these active ingredients, nor do they mention possible side effects or contraindications. This lack of information increases the risk of harmful effects for the consumers.

Experts point out that erectile dysfunction is often linked to aging and low testosterone levels. However, lifestyle factors, including the use of substances like alcohol, nicotine, and marijuana, can also contribute to sexual dysfunction. While ED medications are helpful for addressing these issues, using these illicit honey products can be dangerous due to their unregulated nature.

Authorities are continuing to monitor the situation, and they advise the public to avoid purchasing or using any products that make unverified health claims, particularly those sold in illegal or unregulated markets.
