In a high-pressure showdown, Frederik Andersen delivered a flawless performance to help the Carolina Hurricanes avoid playoff elimination. With their season on the line in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Final, the veteran goalie stepped up, stopping all 20 shots in a commanding 3-0 win against the Florida Panthers at Amerant Bank Arena.
The Hurricanes now trail the best-of-seven series 3-1, but Andersen’s return in net has breathed new life into the team.
Goalie Rebound Sparks Momentum Shift
After being benched for Game 3, Andersen returned to the crease with renewed determination. The 35-year-old had previously surrendered nine goals over five periods in Games 1 and 2. That prompted coach Rod Brind’Amour to give backup Pyotr Kochetkov a chance in Game 3—a decision that backfired when Carolina fell 6-2.
With the pressure mounting, Brind’Amour went back to Andersen for Game 4, and it proved to be the right call.
Captain and Coach Praise Calm Control
“Freddie was unreal,” said captain Jordan Staal. “He made some unbelievable saves, especially on shots that looked sure to score.”
Coach Brind’Amour echoed the sentiment. “He looked calm and confident,” he noted. “He doesn’t throw himself around. He’s always in control, and that showed tonight.”
Andersen’s shutout was his second of the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs and fifth of his postseason career.
Andersen Focused on Team, Not Past
When asked about being benched, Andersen kept the focus on the team. “It’s not about that,” he said. “It’s about doing what helps the team win. I was just ready when my number was called.”
He also avoided comparisons to his earlier performances. “You just try to be ready in the moment and give your best,” he said. “Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. Tonight, it worked.”
Game-Winning Goal Breaks the Deadlock
The score remained 0-0 until rookie Logan Stankoven netted the opening goal at 10:45 of the second period. That goal would stand as the game-winner, thanks to Andersen’s stellar goaltending.
With Florida desperately trying to equalize in the third, Carolina sealed the victory with two empty-net goals. Sebastian Aho scored at 17:49, followed by Staal at 18:15, cementing the 3-0 final.
Hurricanes Stay Alive With Confidence Boost
Game 4 wasn’t just a win—it was a statement. After falling behind 3-0 in the series, Carolina showed they’re not done yet. Andersen’s dominance has likely secured his place in net for Game 5 at home in Raleigh.
“There’s no debate now,” Brind’Amour said. “Freddie’s our guy.”
Andersen is ready for more. “I love playing with this team,” he said. “Happy to get back in, and I’m looking forward to another shot in two days.”
Looking Ahead to Game 5
The Hurricanes will host the Panthers at Lenovo Center on Wednesday at 8 p.m. ET, aiming to narrow the series gap. With Andersen in top form, Carolina fans have reason to believe a comeback could be in the making.
If the Hurricanes are to pull off a miracle, they’ll need more magic from their “unreal” goalie.
