A one-year-old girl is safe after police launched an Amber Alert on Tuesday evening. Officers confirmed the child’s father is now wanted in connection with a deadly shooting earlier the same day in Brampton, Ontario.
Police issued the alert around 5 p.m. and cancelled it just before 7 p.m. after confirming the child’s safety.
“I can now confirm that the child has been located by police safe and sound,” said Const. Mandeep Khatra. “We believe the child was dropped off to family members.”
He did not share where the girl was found but confirmed investigators are searching for her 38-year-old father.
Woman Found Dead in Brampton Plaza
The incident began around 2 p.m. when officers responded to reports of gunfire at a plaza near Queen Street East and Airport Road. Police found a woman dead at the scene.
Khatra said the suspect fled moments later in a car with his young daughter in the back seat. He described the situation as “an intimate partner-related incident,” though investigators are still trying to confirm the exact details.
“It’s still early,” Khatra said. “We’re looking at all different avenues and trying to figure out what exactly transpired. But most importantly, right now we’re trying to find the suspect.”
Police have not yet released the victim’s name or age.
Police Launch Massive Search
Authorities identified the suspect’s vehicle as a black 2024 Nissan Kicks with Quebec licence plate FRV4520. He is described as five foot nine, about 175 pounds, with a slim build, short brown hair, hazel eyes, and a clean-shaven face. He was last seen wearing a dark hoodie, blue jeans, and carrying a black crossbody bag.
Police across southern Ontario joined the search Tuesday evening. Investigators tracked the suspect’s movements toward the Niagara Region, where officers warned residents in Fort Erie’s Crystal Beach area to stay indoors and lock their doors.
Later that night, police said they believed the man had left the region.
Suspect Considered Armed and Dangerous
Const. Khatra urged the public not to approach the suspect or his vehicle. “The suspect is considered armed and dangerous,” he said. “If anyone spots him, call 911 right away.”
Investigators are asking anyone who was in the Brampton area around 2 p.m. to share dashcam or security footage. They believe witness information could help track the suspect’s movements.
Community on Edge
The case has shocked residents across the Greater Toronto Area. Many expressed relief that the little girl is safe but concern for the ongoing manhunt. Police say the search will continue until the suspect is found.
As the investigation unfolds, officers are focusing on locating the man and piecing together what led to the tragic shooting.
