Google is gearing up to release Pixel Fold 2 with an 8.02-inch foldable screen, expected to debut in May. (Google)

Google is gearing up to unveil its second foldable smartphone later this year, with the Pixel Fold 2 slated for a possible debut in May, during the company's annual developer conference. Anticipated to be an improvement over its predecessor, the Pixel Fold 2 is expected to boast a larger tablet-sized screen, measuring at 8.02 inches when unfolded, according to insights leaked by DSCC analyst Ross Young.

Young's disclosures suggest that the Pixel Fold 2 will feature a substantial increase in screen real estate compared to the original model, with an 8.02-inch foldable display and a 6.29-inch cover screen. Manufacturing of the foldable panels for this book-style device is anticipated to commence in April.

Comparatively, the Pixel Fold 2's predecessor, the original Pixel Fold, offered a 7.6-inch inner foldable screen and a 5.8-inch outer display. The notable expansion in screen size underscores Google's commitment to enhancing user experience in its foldable lineup.

The Pixel Fold 2 is poised to be unveiled either at the Google I/O event in May or alongside the Pixel 9 series launch event in October. Speculated to be equipped with the Tensor G4 SoC and 16GB of RAM, the device is expected to face competition from rival foldables such as the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 6.

Last year, Google introduced the Pixel Fold during the Google I/O 2023 event, pricing the base model with 256GB storage at $1,799. Powered by Google's Tensor G2 SoC and boasting a Titan M2 security chip, the original Pixel Fold featured 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM.

Its imaging capabilities included a triple rear camera setup comprising a 48-megapixel primary wide-angle lens, a 10.8-megapixel ultrawide camera, and a 10.8-megapixel dual PD telephoto lens, along with a 9.5-megapixel selfie sensor and an 8-megapixel inner selfie camera. The device housed a 4,821mAh battery supporting 30W charging and wireless charging.
