Actor Eric Dane has shared that he has been diagnosed with ALS, a progressive and incurable neurological disease. The 52-year-old star, widely recognized for his roles in Grey’s Anatomy and Euphoria, made the announcement on Thursday, April 10, in a heartfelt statement to People magazine.
“I have been diagnosed with ALS,” Dane revealed. “I am grateful to have my loving family by my side as we navigate this next chapter.”
Staying Strong Through the Storm
Eric Dane is married to actress Rebecca Gayheart, with whom he has two daughters, Billie, 15, and Georgia, 13. He expressed deep appreciation for his family's unwavering support during this challenging time.
He also acknowledged the role his work plays in his life, especially his involvement in Euphoria, HBO’s hit series, which is set to begin production for season three after a long hiatus.
“I feel fortunate that I am able to continue working and am looking forward to returning to set of Euphoria next week,” Dane stated. “I kindly ask that you give my family and I privacy during this time.”
What is ALS?
ALS, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, attacks the nervous system by damaging nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. Over time, it leads to muscle weakness and the gradual loss of motor functions. According to the Mayo Clinic, the disease has no known cure and typically worsens over time.
Reconnecting Through Hardship
Dane’s health update comes just weeks after a significant development in his personal life. In March, Gayheart filed to dismiss her divorce from the actor. The couple originally married in 2004 but had separated in 2018 after 14 years together. Despite their split, they remained committed to co-parenting.
In an interview with E! News on April 9, a day before Dane’s diagnosis became public, Gayheart spoke openly about the current state of their relationship.
“We are best of friends and are really close. We are great coparents,” she said. “Eric and I have really figured out the formula to staying a family, and I think our kids are benefiting greatly from it, and we are as well.”
A New Chapter Built on Love and Respect
Reflecting on their relationship, Gayheart emphasized that their journey together, even with its ups and downs, was not a failure.
“I think it’s important to not look at a relationship that ends as a failure. It’s just a season. It wasn’t a failure. It was a huge success,” she explained. “We were together for 15 years and had two beautiful kids. That’s how we choose to look at it.”
As the star begins his battle with ALS, the couple’s unity and mutual respect shine through—an example of love evolving beyond traditional roles, and a reminder of the strength found in family bonds.
