Hawaii has seen fewer visitors from Canada in recent months, raising concern among tourism officials. As many Canadians choose not to travel to the United States, some destinations have started to feel the impact. Hawaii, known as a favourite getaway for Canadians, now looks for ways to bring travellers back.

New Plan Under Consideration

Lawmakers in Hawaii have introduced a new idea to address the decline. They are considering the creation of a travel ambassador role focused on Canada. The proposal has moved forward in the state legislature and reached about halfway through the approval process as of early March 2026.

Officials hope this role will help rebuild strong travel ties between Canada and the Hawaiian Islands.

Role Focused on Building Connections

The proposed ambassador would work under the Department of Business, Economic Development, and Tourism. The governor would appoint the person to serve a four-year term.

Instead of leading advertising campaigns, the ambassador would focus on maintaining close contact with travel groups and industry partners in Canada. The role centres on building long-term relationships rather than short-term promotions.

Officials want someone who can stay connected with travel professionals and keep interest in Hawaii active through regular communication.

Details Still Under Discussion

Lawmakers continue to debate the plan, and several details remain unclear. Officials have not yet decided where the ambassador would be based or how the role would operate day to day.

At this stage, the proposal focuses only on Canada. Hawaii has not announced similar plans for other countries or regions.

Tourism Industry Watches Closely

Tourism plays a key role in Hawaii’s economy, and changes in visitor numbers can have a wide impact. Businesses that rely on travellers, such as hotels, restaurants, and tour operators, continue to watch the situation closely.

The proposed ambassador role reflects a growing effort to respond to shifting travel patterns and strengthen connections with important markets like Canada.

A Step Toward Recovery

Hawaii’s plan shows a new approach to tourism. By focusing on relationships rather than advertising, officials hope to rebuild trust and interest among Canadian travellers.

The outcome of the proposal may shape how other destinations respond to similar challenges in the future.
