The Carolina Hurricanes staged a dramatic comeback to defeat the Toronto Maple Leafs 5-4 on Sunday at Scotiabank Arena. Logan Stankoven scored the go-ahead goal in the third period, completing a rally from a 4-2 deficit. Carolina has now won four games in a row.

Stankoven’s Heroics Seal the Win

The game-winning play came at 12:13 of the third period. Toronto defenseman Jake McCabe turned the puck over to Nikolaj Ehlers, who found K’Andre Miller in the slot. Miller slid a short pass to Logan Stankoven, who scored from the left face-off dot, giving Carolina the lead.

Hurricanes coach Rod Brind’Amour praised his team’s effort. “We had opportunities and played solid overall. We made a few mistakes, but the effort was there,” he said.

Hurricanes’ Balanced Scoring

Carolina’s rally featured goals from Sebastian Aho, Seth Jarvis, Sean Walker, and Taylor Hall, with Brandon Bussi stopping 16 shots. The team outshot Toronto 22-2 in the third period, showcasing dominance in the final frame.

Walker cut the Maple Leafs’ lead to 4-3 in the second period with a blue-line shot past goalie Dennis Hildeby. Hall tied the game 4-4 early in the third period, following a rebound from Jackson Blake’s shot.

Maple Leafs’ Early Lead

Toronto built a 4-2 advantage in the first half. William Nylander opened the scoring at 5:00 of the first period with a backhand deke past Bussi. Sebastian Aho equalized on the power play at 8:34.

Seth Jarvis gave Carolina a 2-1 lead before John Tavares tied it at 2-2 during his 1,200th NHL game. Nylander scored again to make it 3-2, followed by Auston Matthews extending Toronto’s lead to 4-2 in the second period.

Maple Leafs Struggle in Third

Toronto’s defensive lapses and turnovers allowed Carolina to seize momentum. “Turnover after turnover cost us. We didn’t win battles tonight,” said Maple Leafs coach Craig Berube.

Hurricanes forward Taylor Hall highlighted the team’s strategy: “We work hard in our forecheck system. Effort and structure help us create opportunities.” Jarvis added, “Pressure and turnovers fuel our game. That’s how we thrive.”

Individual Highlights

Nylander extended his point streak to 10 games, contributing seven goals and 12 assists. Maple Leafs defenseman Morgan Rielly reached a five-game point streak, recording seven assists.

Hurricanes defenseman Charles Alexis Legault left the game after a cut to his arm during a first-period scrum. Coach Brind’Amour confirmed he was hospitalized but expected to return.

Carolina’s Resilience Pays Off

The Hurricanes showed resilience, turning a two-goal deficit into a dramatic comeback. Stankoven’s third-period goal capped a team effort driven by strong forechecking and precise passing.

Carolina now sits at 11-4-0, riding a four-game winning streak. Toronto drops to 8-7-1 after losing two straight. Both teams will look to correct mistakes and continue their pursuit of consistency in upcoming games.
