The International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) is setting the stage to introduce 3-on-3 hockey as a new event in the 2030 Winter Olympics, aiming to expand the sport’s presence on the Olympic platform. Following in the footsteps of 3x3 basketball, which made its Olympic debut in 2021, the IIHF believes that bringing a similar format to ice hockey could increase fan engagement and bring more players into the Olympic fold.
The proposal to add 3-on-3 hockey will need to be submitted to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for consideration. The IIHF has until January to file its official statement of interest, with a deadline of March 30 to complete an initial questionnaire for the IOC. A final decision on whether the sport will be added to the Winter Olympics is expected by the end of 2024, giving organizers time to prepare for its inclusion in the French Alps event.

The idea of 3-on-3 hockey builds on recent successes with 3x3 basketball. Basketball’s shortened format first appeared at the Tokyo 2021 Olympics, continued at the Paris Games this year, and will be featured again at the 2028 Games in Los Angeles. By allowing for smaller teams, quicker games, and a more intense, fast-paced environment, the IIHF believes that a 3-on-3 version of ice hockey could attract more diverse talent and make the sport more accessible to players and fans alike.

The 3-on-3 hockey format is not entirely new; the IIHF has experimented with it over the past several years. This version of the game typically involves fewer players on each team and focuses on skill, agility, and quick play, which are increasingly popular attributes in sports competitions today. If the IOC accepts the proposal, up to 240 new athletes could have the opportunity to compete in the Olympics, expanding the field to include amateurs and non-NHL professionals alongside NHL stars. This move comes as the NHL recently confirmed its players will return to Olympic competition in 2026 after sitting out both the 2018 and 2022 Games.

For hockey fans, adding a 3-on-3 format could be exciting and bring new energy to Olympic events. The format promises faster games and heightened action, elements that could appeal to younger audiences and those looking for a fresh take on traditional sports. For athletes, the format offers more opportunities to compete at the highest level, as the reduced team size could allow more players to join the Olympic ranks.

Ultimately, the IIHF’s proposal is part of a broader trend in global sports to make competitions more inclusive and engaging. As the IOC evaluates the potential benefits and logistics of this proposal, fans and athletes around the world await a decision that could shape the future of Olympic ice hockey.
