India and Canada have taken a significant step toward mending their fractured relationship. The two nations agreed to restore full diplomatic ties, nearly two years after tensions flared over the killing of a Sikh separatist on Canadian soil. This reset marks a fresh beginning in India-Canada relations, with both leaders signaling cooperation and mutual respect.

Diplomatic Channels Reopen After Long Freeze

On Tuesday, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney met on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Alberta, Canada. During their conversation, both leaders agreed to reestablish high commissions in New Delhi and Ottawa. A joint statement from Carney’s office confirmed the appointment of new high commissioners and a resumption of regular consular and business services.

This announcement signals a thaw in diplomatic frost that began in 2023 following serious allegations from Canada.

The Source of the Strain: Nijjar’s Assassination

Tensions escalated in June 2023 after the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Canadian citizen and vocal proponent of an independent Khalistan. He was shot dead by masked gunmen outside a Sikh temple in Surrey, British Columbia. Canada’s then-Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused the Indian government of involvement—a charge New Delhi vehemently denied, calling the allegations “absurd and politically motivated.”

The fallout led to the expulsion of diplomats, suspension of visa services, and fiery exchanges. India accused Canada of giving shelter to individuals promoting anti-India sentiments and “terrorist activities,” which Ottawa firmly rejected.

A G7 Invitation Signals a Shift

Despite the strained past, PM Carney extended an invitation to Modi for the G7 summit, even though India isn’t a member. Carney emphasized India’s growing global influence and importance, especially during times of global crisis.

Other non-member countries invited included Brazil, South Africa, Mexico, Ukraine, Australia, and South Korea—further highlighting Canada’s interest in inclusive global dialogue.

During their meeting, the two leaders were seen exchanging smiles and handshakes, showing no visible signs of past discord. Carney described hosting Modi as a “great honor,” noting India’s consistent participation in the G7 since 2018.

A Fresh Tone of Cooperation and Friendship

Modi reciprocated Carney’s warmth with a social media post:

“Had an excellent meeting with Prime Minister Mark Carney. India and Canada are united by our democratic values and commitment to the rule of law.”

He added that both sides look forward to strengthening India-Canada friendship and collaboration.

According to Carney’s office, the leaders discussed expanding ties in technology, digital transition, food security, and critical minerals. However, neither publicly addressed the Nijjar incident during their talks.

Protests Remind of Lingering Tensions

While the leaders focused on diplomacy, protests erupted outside the summit venue in Calgary. Several Sikh demonstrators waved Khalistan flags and voiced opposition to Modi’s presence. Some protesters demanded accountability for Nijjar’s killing, keeping the controversial issue alive in public discourse.

When asked about Nijjar during a press briefing, Carney remained cautious, stating,

“There is a judicial process underway, and I need to be careful about further commentary.”

He later confirmed in an interview that he had privately discussed the matter with Modi but offered no details.

A New Chapter Begins in India-Canada Relations

While the Nijjar issue casts a long shadow, both nations appear determined to move forward. The reopening of diplomatic channels and emphasis on collaboration signal a desire for stability and growth.

This diplomatic reset could pave the way for improved trade, technological partnerships, and people-to-people connections, crucial for two democracies with deep diaspora ties and shared global responsibilities.

The road ahead for India and Canada relations may not be smooth, but Tuesday’s developments offer a promising restart after a turbulent chapter.
