India has lodged a strong protest against the chanting of "Khalistan" slogans during a public event attended by Canadian leaders.

On Monday, April 29, 2024, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) summoned the Canadian Deputy High Commissioner to convey deep concern and strong objection to the incident. This act underscores India’s stance against separatism and extremism, emphasizing the importance of political responsibility in international relations.

The protest highlights India’s commitment to maintaining peaceful relations with Canada while condemning actions that promote violence and discord. Such incidents strain bilateral ties and pose a threat to the safety and well-being of citizens in both countries.

This isn't the first time such activities have occurred. During a speech by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at an event in Toronto, slogans supporting Khalistan were chanted. These chants were heard during the Khalsa Day celebration, marking the Sikh New Year. Trudeau, along with other Canadian leaders, attended the event, but he chose not to intervene to stop the anti-India slogans. Instead, he reiterated his commitment to upholding Sikh rights and freedoms.

Trudeau also pledged to enhance security around Sikh places of worship following the assassination of a Khalistani leader outside a Gurdwara last year. His remarks implicating India in the killing further heightened tensions between the two countries, resulting in India’s retaliatory actions against Canadian diplomats.

The MEA's official statement expressed deep concern over such disturbing actions being allowed to continue unchecked at the event. This highlights the political space given in Canada to separatism, extremism, and violence. These expressions not only impact India-Canada relations but also encourage a climate of violence and criminality in Canada to the detriment of its own citizens.

Foreign policy experts interpret India’s firm response as a reminder of the importance of upholding democratic principles and respecting the sovereignty of nations. It also stresses the need for international cooperation in addressing issues of extremism and terrorism.

As both countries navigate complex geopolitical challenges, fostering dialogue and mutual understanding is imperative to ensure peaceful coexistence. India’s protest against the ‘Khalistan’ slogans reflects its unwavering commitment to upholding peace, stability, and harmony on the global stage.
