On Friday, the Pakistan Air Force confirmed that it used a Chinese PL-15 missile in response to India's attack on nine terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) earlier this week. This was the first time any country has publicly admitted to using the PL-15 missile in combat.
The PL-15: A Powerful Missile
The PL-15 missile is a long-range, radar-guided air-to-air missile. It has an impressive range of over 200 kilometers, making it a significant threat to enemy aircraft. The missile is considered a game-changer in air combat, capable of engaging targets far beyond the visual range. This missile is comparable to India’s DRDO-developed Astra missile.
Pakistan's confirmation of its use of the PL-15 missile follows an attempted missile attack on India on Thursday. The missile debris was found in the Punjab districts of Hoshiarpur and Bathinda. India’s air defense systems successfully intercepted the missile mid-flight, preventing any damage.
China-Pakistan Cooperation
The PL-15 missile is a recent addition to Pakistan’s arsenal, supplied by its close ally, China. The missile is part of Pakistan’s growing military ties with China, which is its biggest supplier of military equipment. The use of the PL-15 missile marks an escalation in the ongoing tensions between India and Pakistan, especially after India's attack on terror camps.
Sandeep Unnithan, a defense analyst, highlighted that this missile has rarely been seen in public and could possibly be fired for the first time. He noted that Indian scientists are closely examining the missile to understand its capabilities and how it compares to India's Astra missile.
A Global Concern
The PL-15 missile has attracted global attention, especially from defense experts. The missile’s range and performance make it a serious concern for other nations, including the United States. Experts believe that the U.S. military is closely studying the missile's capabilities, as it could be a threat in any potential conflict.
According to Unnithan, the PL-15 missile will likely become a major topic in the next round of defense talks between India and the U.S. The U.S. is reportedly developing a missile, the AIM-260 Joint Advanced Tactical Missile, to counter the PL-15's capabilities.
The use of the PL-15 missile by Pakistan underscores the increasing military tensions between India and Pakistan. As both countries continue to engage in a battle of military technologies, the international community watches closely, especially as new threats like the PL-15 emerge. India’s advanced defense systems, however, have shown their ability to intercept such missiles and protect the country from potential harm.
