"Every day presents new opportunities for joy. Finding fulfillment in each moment is truly rewarding," Bruce conveyed through a text-to-voice communication device to Global News.
Bruce stands as a vocal advocate for Project Hope, an initiative at the University of British Columbia (UBC) dedicated to unraveling the mysteries of ALS and seeking a cure. Recognizing her tireless efforts, Bruce was recently honored with the 2023 ALS Society of BC's exceptional advocacy award.
"Project Hope signifies the beginning of progress," Bruce affirmed. "Witnessing advancements in research is incredibly encouraging."
With a keen eye on the playoffs, Bruce believes in the Canucks' potential to secure victory, particularly under the leadership of her favorite player, team captain Quinn Hughes, provided they maintain their health.
Before her ALS diagnosis, Bruce led an active lifestyle, engaging in various hobbies, including hockey, swimming, skiing, and volunteering. Since 2012, her interests have evolved to painting, playing video games, and writing.
Wendy Toyers, a champion for the ALS Society of BC, commended Bruce's unwavering spirit, noting her determination to give back despite the challenges posed by the disease.
"The courage displayed by individuals like Jan, who bravely share their experiences with ALS, is truly inspirational. It motivates me to contribute as much as I can," Toyers remarked.
Toyers emphasized Bruce's ability to uplift those around her, inspiring fellow ALS patients to embrace life to the fullest.
While Bruce faces hurdles in communication due to ALS-related impairments, she remains hopeful for breakthroughs, especially with advancements in artificial intelligence.
"If given the choice between walking or speaking normally, I would choose the latter," Bruce expressed, highlighting the significance of communication in her daily life.
Bruce remains optimistic about the future, believing that rapid technological advancements could revolutionize ALS treatment and enhance communication capabilities.
With the Canucks' playoff journey capturing the attention of fans, Toyers believes Bruce's positive energy could serve as a good luck charm for the team.
"The enthusiasm surrounding the Canucks' playoff run brings joy to everyone. As we cheer on the team, we're uplifted by the collective energy," Toyers remarked.
