In a recent address at CES 2024, Intel's CEO, Pat Gelsinger, emphasized the groundbreaking nature of the AI PC, describing it as a tool that revolutionizes access to artificial intelligence. This comes in line with Intel's "AI Everywhere" strategy, highlighting the profound transformation it brings to the personal computer experience – the most significant in two decades, comparable to the impact of Intel Centrino on wireless connectivity in laptops.

The AI PC is essentially a personal computer equipped with the processing capabilities to handle sophisticated AI tasks locally, eliminating the need for reliance on cloud computing. Gelsinger presented three guiding principles of edge computing – economics, physics, and land – to advocate for the advantages of AI processing on personal devices.

The economic aspect emphasizes cost-effectiveness, contending that running AI workloads on individual devices is more economical than renting cloud servers. Physics come into play with the increased responsiveness of local processing, reducing the time it takes to send data back and forth to the cloud. The principle of land refers to the control users can exert over their data, allowing for local storage if there are concerns about cloud storage or dealing with major cloud service providers.

Gelsinger asserted that these principles would propel various AI applications towards edge devices, such as PCs. Intel's recent introduction of the Intel Core Ultra mobile processor family, featuring the Neural Processing Unit (NPU), is a key component in ushering in the era of the AI PC. This development is expected to impact over 230 laptop and PC designs from manufacturers globally.

Predictions from the Boston Consulting Group indicate that AI PCs will constitute 80% of the PC market in 2024, raising questions about the future viability of hybrid cloud alternatives. Gelsinger clarified that while building foundation models may require extensive cloud resources, the trend is shifting towards users employing open-source foundation models, like Meta's Llama 2, to run smaller models on their data for specific applications.

Notably, Nvidia also showcased AI-ready laptops at CES 2024, aligning with the AI PC narrative. However, Gelsinger proudly declared Intel as the driving force behind the AI PC, expressing a degree of appreciation for imitation in the tech industry.

Intel's expansion of the AI PC experience beyond traditional computing platforms was highlighted with the announcement of integrating AI into automotive systems. As part of the "AI Everywhere" strategy, Intel unveiled AI-enabled chips for automobiles and the acquisition of Silicon Mobility, a company specializing in SoCs for intelligent electric vehicle energy management. Geely's Zeekr brand is set to be the first original equipment manufacturer (OEM) to adopt Intel's new family of System on Chips (SoCs) for self-driving vehicles.
