John Lithgow Confirms Casting As Dumbledore In HBO's Harry Potter.

The much-anticipated Harry Potter television series has officially found its headmaster. Veteran actor John Lithgow has confirmed that he will portray Albus Dumbledore in HBO’s upcoming adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s beloved books.

The news, initially reported by The Hollywood Reporter, was later confirmed by Lithgow himself in an interview with ScreenRant. The 79-year-old actor revealed that the offer came as an unexpected surprise.

Lithgow’s Reaction to the Role

Speaking about the casting, Lithgow shared his excitement and apprehension. “It came as a total surprise to me,” he admitted. “I was at the Sundance Film Festival when I got the call. It wasn’t an easy decision because this role is going to define the last chapter of my life. But I’m very excited.”

He jokingly added, “By the time the series wraps up, I’ll be about 87 years old—but I’ve said yes.”

Following in Legendary Footsteps

Lithgow will be stepping into the shoes of Richard Harris and Michael Gambon, both of whom previously portrayed Dumbledore in the original film series. Harris played the wise headmaster in the first two movies before his passing in 2002. Gambon then took over the role until his death in 2023.

With a career spanning decades, Lithgow has earned multiple Emmys and Oscar nominations. His recent projects include Conclave, The Crown, The Old Man, and Jimpa.

A Fresh Take on the Wizarding World

The upcoming Harry Potter series promises to be a more detailed adaptation of the books compared to the blockbuster films. It will delve deeper into the magical journey of Harry Potter, an orphan who discovers he is a wizard and enrolls at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Under Dumbledore’s guidance, he learns to master his powers and ultimately faces the dark wizard, Lord Voldemort.

Francesca Gardiner will serve as the showrunner, while Mark Mylod is set to direct multiple episodes. Filming is expected to begin this summer.

HBO Responds to Casting Speculation

While Lithgow has confirmed his role, HBO has yet to make an official announcement. The network released a statement acknowledging the buzz around the series, saying, “We appreciate that such a high-profile series will draw a lot of rumor and speculation. As we move through pre-production, we will only confirm details as we finalize deals.”

With John Lithgow leading the cast, fans are eager to see how this new era of Harry Potter unfolds on the small screen.
